Hi everyone! I am Gemma - a wildlife biologist from New Zealand, living and loving life in Canada. Not new to the world of pet sitting, but new to the world of Rover! With 15 years experience caring for pets, including 3 years service at an animal shelter, I bring a unique depth of understanding and compassion to every interaction. My experience has equipped me with invaluable insights into the diverse needs and temperaments of various dog and cat breeds, ensuring tailored care for each furry companion. Having successfully trained numerous puppies, provided long term house/pet sitting and being proficient in leash training, I can help out you and your pup in many different capacities. In addition, I have a successful career as a wildlife conservationist, so in every aspect of my life I strive to deliver unparalleled care and dedication to animals, setting myself apart as a dependable and empathetic pet sitter.

Very disappointed that my 2 large dogs barely got any exercise while Gemma stayed with them for a full 24 hours. I love on 4 acres with lots of trails and yes there are bears here, it's the island..sadly she would not walk them once she saw bear poop. I hired her because I was going in the hospital for surgery and she messaged me asking if I knew when I was coming home meanwhile this was already discussed and she had offered to stay as long as I needed so that was very stressful for me. I also came home to a very dirty house which I had cleaned the day before, yes my dogs track stuff in but the counter was dirty,the dog dishes weren't washed after eating out of them amongst other things and she started she will take care of your home. Bottom line is I was very disappointed especially after reading how much she loves animals, I certainly got the opposite feeling when I received texts telling me she wasn't comfortable taking my dogs for a walk, I've never seen a bear in this property in 16 years and as a dog sitter you should know what to do in situations with other animals.
I have known Gemma for several years now and can honestly say she is the most kindest and caring person/animal lover i have ever met. We have seen how she interacts with all kinds of animals and the time she puts into each and every animal. Gemma looked after our mother dog and 7 puppies while we on holiday for two weeks and did an amazing job. I have no hesitation in recommending Gemma for any position she chooses
Gemma has dog sat for us many times, and with different breeds, over the years. From small breed puppies (even house training 2 of our Bichon Frise pups!) through to larger Labradors she has handled our fur babies with ease. We would trust her with any breed of dog, at any life stage, plus she has the rare ability to connect and make the animals feel at ease. You can tell she really loves animals and her Honors degree in Zoology highlights this. She is an excellent communicator letting us know how our pets are when we are away and making us feel at ease. We would highly recommend Gemma to any pet lover knowing they have left their treasured fur baby in very capable hands.
Gemma has looked after Nacho twice now while I have been away on work trips. Dog was happy. House was clean. Highly recommend. 5 stars.

Additionally, knowing their leash manners, recall abilities, and comfort level with other dogs and people informs how I navigate walks and outdoor activities. Clear communication and transparent feedback from you allow me to provide the best possible care. For cats, details such as dietary requirements, medical conditions, allergies, and any behavioural insights are also very helpful.
A typical day
A typical day under my care is filled with enriching activities designed to keep your furry friends happy, healthy, and entertained. These activities will be catered towards your pet’s needs and preferences- as no two pets are the same! For dogs, mornings often start with a walk or energetic play session in the backyard, allowing your pets to stretch their legs, sniff new smells and get some fresh air. Walks are equally about the physical exercise as they are about the mental stimulation, so I believe in allowing the pace of these walks to be set by the dog, stopping when they are investigating a smell and speeding up when they want to get their legs moving. Depending on the pups energy levels, we might embark on an adventure to a nearby park or trail for a hike or a game of fetch. Being a runner, I would also love to take them with me on runs around the neighbourhood and trails, adjusting for their level of fitness. Back at home, I ensure plenty of interactive playtime tailored to your pet's interests and energy levels. Whether it's cuddles and pats on the couch, or a stimulating training session to sharpen their skills, I provide attentive companionship and positive reinforcement throughout the day. Regular potty breaks, refreshing water, and scheduled meals are incorporated seamlessly into our routine, maintaining stability and comfort for your pets.
