Pet care experience
I am a post-doctoral researcher with flexible hours, living alone with my three dogs. I have been training dogs for fun since senior year of college. And have gotten professional training on training through Operant Conditioning and Positive Reinforcement for four years while I was getting my PhD in Bioengineering here at the UofI. I have three wonderfully trained, loving and playful dogs, all named after the Dragonball Z Kai series (Gohan, Trunks and Kai). They are large dogs, one is a black Lab, the other two are long and short haired German Shepherds. Our large fenced in backyard allows for much play and the inside of the house belongs to the dogs to move freely. I get along with any furry animal instantaneously and my stance on "aggressive" dogs is that they are just dogs wanting to be understood.
Reviews
My beagle stayed with Gelson for 8 days. The day after I picked her up, she came down with kennel cough. A word of warning to any future clients, make sure any communication is in writing. There was a mix up with the drop off time and some of my dogs food habits (she likes to jump on tables to grab food, especially bread). The mix up happened because I gave him the information orally instead of in writing. He also did not communicate daily as I had asked through text. We did get communications and texts but usually because I prompted them. Peggy did seem happy in the photos that were sent.
Gelson sent me a message saying "Anyway see you around 2." So we showed up at his house a little after 2 PM. Nobody was home. He apparently didn't realize we were coming. So we came back around 2:30 and we agreed that I'd pick him up around 5 PM. About 4:45, I sent him a message telling him I was on my way, but when I arrived, nobody was home. He sent me another message asking me to move the pickup to 6 PM. This wasn't great for me, but I said OK. So when I show up at 6 PM... you guessed it... nobody was home. I sent yet another message and he showed up around 6:20. I noticed that the water dish in the room where my dog had been kept was empty and appeared to be dry, which concerned me, and he appeared to be very thirsty when we got home. Later, Gelson sent me a message telling me how rude I was, because apparently expecting someone to actually be home at the agreed-upon pickup times had been a gross imposition on my part.
Gelson was so great with our dog while we were away for 10 days. It was our puppy’s first time away from us, and being a COVID-puppy with little socialization with other dogs and people, and it went better than expected! Gelson gave us regular updates on how she was settling in to his and his dogs’ routine. It helps that his 3 dogs are well-behaved and very friendly. We felt very comfortable leaving our dog in his care and have rebooked him later this summer again!
Gelson was great! Great communication and service ☺️ Thank you for updating us periodically on how our dogs were doing ? made us feel at ease. Our dogs were happy from playing all weekend when we picked them up ?

The house has many toys around the house for dogs to play with (balls, ropes, chewing bones). If the owner feels comfortable, I can take new furry friends along for a walk to the large park we have behind our house.
