Pet care experience
I had Ashley, a Cairn Terrier, for 14 years, and then rescued a Bijon Poodle Mix at 9 years old on behalf of a senior citizen friend who had some problems. Ashley, the Cairn, was a rescue and due to growling at me, I needed a trainer after 30 days. After one session with the trainer, Robin Kovary, I corrected 10 things I was doing wrong, and began to work on sit commands, walking issues, and establishing who was the alpha dog - me! Everything turned around in 24 hours and we loved each other very much. I have read many dog training books, and worked with other trainers, and know a lot about dog behavior and living with dogs. One thing that worked with Ashley, and could work with dogs getting to know a new walker or sitter, is to be a little aloof initially with the dog. Let the dog get to know you (or me!), and show curiosity about the new person. It also helps to always have some treats and make friends with the dog - after having them sit or leap or catch a ball! Also, even with and sometimes especially with small dogs, a really good walk is what they need to be relaxed and comfortable. So an around the block walk or a good walk in Washington Square Park is what I think is important. I also think socialization is very important. Dogs that the owners say are shy, may just not be exposed enough to other dogs. If a dog has four walks a day, they should be able to meet other dogs and begin to be comfortable with their own kind. As far as dog runs, I love the small dog run at Washington Square Park but would not bring a new dog there until I really new the dog and it responded to me. I love all dogs! I am what you call "dog hungry" as I don't have my own, and will take care of yours as if it were mine - temporarily. Looking forward to meeting you and yours.

Before dog sitting for a dog in their house, I would need to let the dog get to know me in their territory first. Several walks over a few days would be good to introduce us to each other, as well as sitting down with the owner either in the living room and/or in the bedroom where we will sleep. The dog has to know I am not a stranger in the home. It is usually best, in my experience, for the dog not to have to stay somewhere else. But they need to be used to the dog sitter in order for me to stay in their home. If they come to my apt., I want to know if they have separation anxiety or if they can stay alone for an hour in a new place without barking. If not, then that dog will be best taken care of in their own location. I love all breeds of dogs.
A typical day
I believe in exercise for all dogs, small and large. If in my neighborhood, one walk will be around and through Washington Square Park, either morning or dinnertime. Every walk I make sure to include an around the block - so four blocks - to give the dog air, ability to smell things, and socialize with other dogs. Fun things will include socializing, treats, nice food, tennis balls or little rubber balls, and nice comfy dog beds or the couch to curl up on.
