Felix is a friend and former coworker who I met in 2010. Felix is the most dedicated and passionate pet owner I've ever known. Shortly after I met him he got his first golden retriever, Boomer, and it changed his life. He woke up at 4 a.m. every day, regardless of the weather, to take him for a walk, and spent his lunch breaks reading books on dog training and behavior, as well as the care and characteristics of golden retrievers and good dog ownership in general. When Boomer began having seizures, Felix searched tirelessly to find a solution, and after several months, found a specialist who was able to help bring the condition under control, drastically improving the quality of Boomer's life. The lengths Felix went to and the way this affected him were truly extraordinary and spoke to his true love and sense of responsibility to his buddy. Two years after Boomer, Daisy, another golden retriever, joined the family. Felix still walks them both daily and cares for them as full members of the family. I've been on several walks and it's astonishing to see how well the dogs respond to him, as well as other people and dogs we encounter. Felix knows all the dogs in his neighborhood too, by breed and temperament if not by name, and enjoys checking in on them as he passes their homes. I have known Felix to sit with a sick dog until the owner could be contacted, and to do so with the same sense of responsibility and urgency as if it were his own pet. Finally, Felix is both generous and enthusiastic when exchanging knowledge of dogs and dog ownership with others, and will be among the sincerest and most capable dog caregivers you could find anywhere.
