I require a meeting to meet the family and the dog(s) involved before starting any new jobs. I am a certified dog trainer, I have always grew up around dogs, and enjoy spending time with them, I have 10+ years working with dogs in groups and one on one, I have worked in a few different animal shelters, and have references availble I require a meeting with the people and any pets involved before starting a job, regardless of pet sitting, dog walking or dog training, I also request vet numbers as well as emergency contacts just to be safe.
