The dog whisperer

Pet care experience

My name is Emma, and I live for dogs! I have been obsessed with animals for my whole life. As a small child, I was constantly trying to escape my family home in downtown Toronto in order to visit the pups at the park directly across the street- and honestly, I haven't changed much since! My friends and family call me the dog whisperer, because wherever I go, I meet and befriend (even the most standoffish) dogs. I have never met a dog I didn't like. Beyond my innate love of canines, I have learned an incredible amount about working with and communicating with animals through over five years of working with horses, both on the ground as a stable hand, and on their backs as a competitive rider and low level trainer. Working with such smart, sensitive and intuitive creatures has taught me a great deal about how animals pick up on and feed off of our energy. I have learned a lot about opening lines of communication through body language and intention, I have learned to be patient, and above all to teach with positive reinforcement and consistency. Additionally, my years of working at the stable have taught me how to bundle up and get the job done throughout all of Canada's four seasons; I will be there for your dog, rain, shine, snow, sleet or hail! I am creating this profile because as a student living in a city far from home, I can't see my own family dog, nor the other dogs in my neighbourhood who I frequently walk when I am home in Toronto. I am dying for some furry companionship! I am in the process of completing a fine arts degree right now, but eventually, with more training and experience my goal is to work with animals. Specifically, I see myself working on rehabilitating abused and problematic dogs. In the meantime, I would love to help you take care of your pet in any way that I can! While your pet is in my charge, I will provide them with the best care imaginable, meeting all of their individual needs and making them feel comfortable, entertained and incredibly loved. My services: Depending on the situation and the amount of time/distance/work required, I am willing to negotiate rates- talk to me. Please note that I can only accept very calm and quiet animals in my personal home- preferably small ones. My landlords live above me and are very strict. If your pet is a little bit rambunctious, talkative, or prone to bouts of property damage, I will come to you! I absolutely love this job and I am ready to do my best to accommodate your schedule and your needs- so please do not hesitate to reach out and start a conversation. I can’t wait to get to know your pet! :)

I can't express how happy, satisfied and grateful I am towards Emma. She met my 12 weeks old puppy before dogsitting him for a day, and even if she knew he was reactive, she was not worried at all and accepted to take him. She did much more than babysitting, because she knows so much about socialization and dogs (and other animals), she clearly helped him get more comfortable. My puppy, who is pretty stubborn, doesn't like to be left somewhere else without his humans and hate when strangers pet him, has been difficult for the first hours, and then, Emma succeeded to calm him down and even get him to lie on her and give her kisses. Honestly, find someone else like Emma would be difficult. She's the best.

Emma was absolutely wonderful with Luna, a recently arrived rescue with a lot of fear and anxiety. I immediately felt she was in safe hands and left with peace of mind. After a few hours I came back to two new best friends and a relaxed pup. Thanks Emma!

Emma was a delight with our pup! We asked her to look after our Rio for a couple of days and she was very accommodating with my multiple cancelled flights. She took Rio on some great walks, kept us in the loop with pictures and videos and spent time with her in our apartment so Rio didn’t get lonely or anxious in her new city. Definitely hope Emma is available to take care of Rio again sometime!

Information Emma T. would like to know about your pet

I have no breed preferences at all, but knowing your dogs breed will help me understand them, their behaviour and their needs better, so let me know. If your dog has any problematic behaviour, I would like to know about it so that I can be ready to deal with it and hopefully help them through it.

A typical day

I believe all creatures need exercise and mental stimulation, and I make this a priority. Your dog will never be bored with me- I will make sure they are using their body and brain, and getting tons of praise for it. I also believe in the value of simple companionship. If I am taking care of your dog- I will do my best to make sure they are not alone, after all, sleepy dogs make great study buddies! I have a lot of energy and love the outdoors- so I would love to go on long hikes with your dog. However, if your dog is a senior, low energy, or just a homebody, that is fine too; we can go on smaller walks, we can hang at home, we can work on indoor trick training, we can sit together in a park and watch the world go by... I have experience with everything from senior dogs, to rambunctious puppies, to small dogs and even energetic border collies; I am ready and willing to meet your dogs needs, whatever they are.
