Certified Vet Assist PreVet Student

Pet care experience

Hello! My name is Emily and I am a pre-vet student who has been recognized as a Certified Vet Assistant by the FVMA for around 3 years now. I have had cats and dogs my entire life, which is one of the reasons why I want to enter the veterinary field. Currently, I have my 14 year old Lhasa Apso named Chloe keeping me company. I have had a range of experience with pets outside of my own home, from the Humane Society, to local clinics, to the Small Animal Hospital at UF. I even had the pleasure of being part of a research team that looked at dog training and behavior, working with individual dogs one on one. As a result, I have been able to practice and strengthen the following skills: - nail trimming - basic grooming and bathing - senior care - administering medications - behavioral training - leash training - socialization If you have any special requests or questions regarding your pet, please don't hesitate to ask! If there is something I do not know or am unsure of, I would be more than happy to redirect you to someone or somewhere that would be of more assistance:) **Please note that I will usually bring someone with me to first time Meet and Greets!**

Safety, trust & environment

Although my space is smaller, my own senior dog lives comfortably with plenty of beds and treats to her liking. I make sure to periodically adjust her fiber intake or supplements as needed and keep a keen eye on her movements and body as she is getting older. As I am offering drop-in and dog walking, I will be respectful of your home, double checking any locks or areas that pets may want to escape from. I always make sure to let pets approach me first and monitor their behavior before making a move on them. If I sense that your pet is not comfortable with something, I will let them be and make sure the owner knows. The last thing I would want to do is cause your pet to be distrusting of new faces and have a bad experience!

Information Emily L. would like to know about your pet

Please let me know if your pet has any special needs, medication, or diet/allergies. I am more than happy to accommodate. As well, please let me know if your pet is dog reactive, doesn't like a certain area of their body touched, etc. It is for the safety of myself and your pet. I would prefer it if the pet had proof of a recent rabies shot as well and any information of flea/tick medications or potential illnesses that can spread to other pets or people!

A typical day

With dogs, I am more than happy to let them walk wherever they want to and sniff around as much as they please. After all, it's good stimulation for their day and keeps them occupied. I personally see dog parks as a big no-no due to behavioral issues that can arise, but that means I can spend more time with your dog one and one with toys, treats, and runs or jogs in fields or big areas! With cats, any use of treats or catnip with be used in moderation if allowed, as well as playing with them as much as they want.
