Old/Disabled pets are my specialty!

Pet care experience

I'm a fulltime pet sitter! My life is dedicated to giving your pets the kind of attentive, compassionate care that they deserve. I've been taking care of animals my whole life, and they've always been an important focal point for me. I've raised and cared for 5 dogs, 4 cats, and a hamster, all with unique personalities and challenges! Right now I have a 16 year old dachshund, a 14 year old blind cat, and a 10 year old foster cat. I'm very comfortable giving cats and dogs pills / oral medications, as I have cared for many sick and disabled animals over my animal care career. If anything ever were to arise with your pet when you're not there, I am an expert vet surrogate. I have extensive knowledge of dog and cat health care from years of experience, paired with the information I gather following veterinary news and science publications in my free time. I have personal experience caring for the following special needs and chronic conditions: allergies, anxiety, arthritis, belly bands, congetial blindness, cataracts and clouded lens, conjestive heart failure, deafness, dementia, diapers, diarrhea, enlarged heart, fast eating, giardhya, hyperthyroidism, incontinence, kidney diease, liver diease, obesity, seizures, stroke, traumatic injury, UTIs, and more. I adopted my dog as an overweight senior with separation anxiety. For his weight problems I have him on a reduced calorie diet, with lots of vegetable treats throughout the day as low calorie high fiber rewards. He takes glucosamine to keep his joints strong, and we get in as many walks around the yard as we can. He uses a lick mat in the tub for anxiety, and I have crate trained him to help with his separation anxiety so that he has a place he feels safe until I return. He uses a variety of slow feeders and puzzles to keep his mind stimulated and sharp!

I believe in respect between a sitter and their client, and in boundaries. I am always trying to be be cognizant of being in someone else's space. I expect privacy when I'm in someone else's home, and they can expect privacy from me. I Just want to feel safe and for you to feel safe with me.

Information Emily H. would like to know about your pet

I like to know how a dog is motivated, some are motivated by food, praise, etc.. Schedules are important to limit stress, I think it's important to keep a dog within their set routine.

A typical day

I will sit with them where they like to spend time, and read the news, or watch TV, and will take them out for interactive potty breaks. I like to give dogs a nice 30 minute walk a day if possible I like to take low calorie training treats, or other low calorie treats or kibble, and sprinkle them around an area in the grass. This gets them to forage for their snacks and really activates their minds, without letting them over indulge on treats. I also like to let dogs lead their walks when possible. Let them explore around and spend as much time sniffing that corner as they want.

I'm mildly disabled and spend a lot of time resting, whether it's with your dog or mine. Taking care of animals is mostly all I do, so my schedule is flexible in every direction! I go to an exercise class a couple times a week, I go to doctors appointments, I run errands, and I usually have dinner with my parents. Every now and then there's a dinner late with my friends, but I never will leave animals for longer than has been agreed upon and previously established. My hours are flexible so I can make almost any care schedule work for me!
