Dog trainer who loves walking dogs!

Pet care experience

Growing up, my parents never let me have any pets of my own. This led me to pet sitting and eventually dog training! Starting around the age of 10, I began caring for all of the neighborhood dogs. The second I had the space and resources, I adopted my first dog, Samson, a Rottweiler / American Bully mix. It was through owning Samson that I fell in love with training. I eventually went to work for KeenDog Training, a NC/SC based company, and spent a few years working as a trainer. During this time I got my second dog, a Malinois named Xena. I both dogs have been trained in scent detection (including imprinting them on narcotics), barn hunt, tracking, and dock diving. They’re the lights of my life! In the summer of 2022, I moved to Colorado. I still work remotely for KeenDog as their office admin, but I stepped back from training full time to spend more time with my now one year old son. I’ve missed working with dogs and I’d like to get back in the game part time. I want to do more than just walk your dog, though. I want to help you raise your dog to be the best that they can be. Individual needs will defer, but I’m happy to help improve your dog’s lose leash walk, establish clear communication through markers, teach new behaviors, hold your dog accountable for known behaviors, etc. Dealing with issues like reactivity or over-arousal? I’m not phased! Let me know what your goals are and we can discuss how we can achieve them.

Emily does a great job caring for my two boys, learning their personalities and helping them with better manners on walks. Thank you, Emily!

Exceptional! Not only were they well cared for throughout the day but Emily took time to learn about their personalities and behavior/training issues beforehand and worked to improve them during the stay. Six stars!

Emily is a great person and she is very trusted with my dogs. She's a great caregiver and a great trainer and her training background is a plus. What's great is that she will actually work with your dog a little bit too! I highly recommend her and you won't be disappointed with the care that she gives your dogs! She also takes some of the best pictures of the dogs!

In one walk, Emily took my dog from pulling like crazy to walking nicely on a loose leash and being neutral around other dogs. She brings so much training expertise to her dog care! She is responsive, dependable, and gets the job done well. I would highly recommend her.

Safety, trust & environment

No matter the environment, I always care for dogs as if they’re my own. I have a large fenced in yard and a spacious home. I have spaces in the house that are gated off in case dogs need to be separated, and I’m also well versed in managing a crate and rotate environment if needed. My own dogs are not the most social (they’re easily annoyed, not aggressive) so I am selective about interactions. They typically are kept in a separate area of the house unless they are being used as distractions for training. Dogs are allowed on the furniture on an individual basis (i.e. dogs may not be allowed if they have a known resource guarding issue). My one year old son is always around, but he is very closely managed (just like the dogs!). Direct interactions between him and dogs are not likely to be allowed.

Information Emily H. would like to know about your pet

Age, breed, temperament, preferences (especially regarding other dogs), allergies, how they do in a crate, and any trouble areas that I should know about / anything we should work on.

A typical day

Every day is different and every dog is different! I always like to provide a balance of mental and physical exercise, but I try to cater to individual needs as much as possible. Overactive mind? Let’s do some free shaping. Love cooperative games? Let’s play fetch or frisbee. Need to work on finding calm in the house? Let’s do some structured place work. If the weather cooperates, I like to spend as much time as possible outdoors and hiking is always a possibility if agreed upon with the owner!
