I am owned by 5 cats and used to have a dog. He was a rescue and had to be potty trained even though he was over 6 years old when we got him. Unfortunately he passed several years ago due to old age but i like to think he had more good years with me then he did being abused. My friends all look to me to watch their dogs/cats/turtles when they are out of town and I have had quite a bit of experience with this. I love playing with animals and I am just as happy to sit quietly with them to read and snuggle. It's what I do with my cats and they love it since I tend to always have one on my lap.
