Happiness Unleashed
Pet care experience
Many years ago in Vietnam, a small rescue dog named Jack brought Jo and I together. Another named Regalo (Reggie) was a wedding “gift” that made our family into four. Over the years, more rescues (including rodents, a few birds, and a tortoise) filled our lives. Our animal-loving attitude has infected friends and family. One of the awesome side-effects is that we are also the dog-sitters of choice, the fill-in fur parents, and often the first source of advice when pet challenges occur. Our new “semi-retired” status offers us an opportunity to extend our passion more widely by offering walks to your dog or dogs in your neighbourhood or on local trails, drop-ins for care and potty breaks, daycare in our yard, and even sleepovers at our home. In regards to in-home care, our dogs are friendly and welcoming but we can provide separate sleeping areas should that be necessary (we have crates as well). Not to be seen as “dog-ist”, we are hoping that some of you need us to help care for other kinds of critters - just ask! We will provide more details on our home situation if daycare or sleepover service is your request. A meet and greet is our policy before taking responsibility for your pup. Passing the care of a family member to another person - even for a few hours - can be anxious for the parent (you) and might be stressful for the animal. This simple check-in will also provide an opportunity for the bond between you and your pet to shine for us - and provide clues for us to make their experience with us even more positive. Our long experience, developed over twenty-plus years of volunteering at rescues and shelters and fostering during pre-adoption, has built our skills and knowledge so you can be confident that safety, sensitivity, and comfort are the priority. Large dogs are welcome - as are “multiples” - a big pack is a lot of fun! We can also support older animals with special needs. We have animal-friendly transport and are flexible with the time of service - Dave gets up ridiculously early.
Reviews
We were so happy with the care David and Joanne gave to Nala during our vacation. This was our first time being away from her for an extended period so we thought of her often. Getting wonderful pictures of her on her walks really helped us to put our minds at ease. She was taken on longer walks than we signed up for and we were happy to see David and Joanne let her play with her sticks and explore in her walks. Thank you guys so much!!
David & Joanne were fantastic Rovers! We left our dog Roddy with them and couldn’t have been happier with the experience. They had a large fenced in yard, and also took Roddy on a wilderness walk. Roddy got along well with their dogs, and David & Joanne treated him as one of their own. They were communicative and sent us regular updates throughout. Would definitely recommend them!
David is an awesome dog walker. Ollie had a great time, burned off lots of energy and came home relaxed and happy!
David and Joanne were so welcoming of our Bella girl! We are new to Rover and they made the experience very smooth and we were confident Bella would be well taken care of. Their 2 family dogs were great too. We got update photos and messages and felt very at ease knowing Bella was being treated as part of the family! We will absolutely take Bella back in the future!

Our home is totally pet-friendly and pretty relaxed in terms of dog access to furniture although we can follow a client's expectations as requested. A wide range of dog beds (size and softness) is available. We can separate dogs for sleeping to private rooms and have a variety of crates on hand. As we have friendly dogs of our own (who are VERY used to visiting pets), the stay over at our home can provide a positive social experience for your loved one. Health support for post-surgery or aging animals is our specialty. Our yard is about 2/3 of an acre, quite private due to limited road frontage and fenced. We are directly on the Otonabee River and manage all dog access to the riverfront quite carefully.

Information David & Joanne W. would like to know about your pet
Whether experienced with this type of animal care service or a first-timer, you will have much to share about your pets and routines. The broader picture we have of the typical day’s experience for your pet(s), the better. Consider the following questions as a guide to the type of information that is essential to prepare us for your pet’s needs. How do they get along with the neighbours and other dogs on a walk? What makes them happy? Do they have any no-go spots or triggers? What is their energy like regarding the pace of a walk or play? Are there key phrases that are helpful for them to ensure their safety?
A typical day
Besides the usual belly rubs, scratches, and some "hide-and-seek" indoors, we will play outside every couple of hours - our yard is large and there is much to explore. Games of fetch are great fun as well. We are not deterred by weather and will safely and comfortably walk your dog two to three times off our property in our neighbourhood where there are several parks. Trips to local trails for a more exciting walk or run can be arranged depending on the time in our home and the client's comfort. We have a heated 3-car garage to provide a bit larger play space indoors if needed. Quiet time for dogs who need a break can provided away from us (and our mutts).

Availability
We are "retired" from our previous profession (overseas teachers) so are available any day - including weekends and most holidays. Advance notice for boarding is better as we fill our days with fun - if we aren't walking a client's dog or boarding a pet, we are visiting family, exploring Peterborough, or walking our own dogs on trails around town.
