Years of experience w/ giant dogs

Pet care experience

I grew up with four Great Danes and two Argentinian Dogos. I took partial responsibility for their care at about 10 years old, gradually increasing until I oversaw everything but veterinary visits by 15. I took animal behavior courses in college and have read several scholarly books on canine biology, communication & body language, psychology, behavior, evolutionary history, etc. I'm active, and am happy to take dogs for long, long walks or moderate length jogs/runs if they would enjoy it. If your dog wants to fetch the same ball or stick 100 times, I'm game. If they want to tug on a rope or search for treats or lightly roughhouse, I'm happy to do it. I much prefer to care for very large or giant dogs, and can keep up with an energetic Bernese or calmly stroll alongside a lazy St. Bernard. I'm also experienced with Livestock Guardian Dogs who may need specialized understanding and care when living in an urban environment. I promise that I am capable of firmly holding the leash if your 200+lb mastiff spots a cat/squirrel/arch nemesis. I am experienced with large, powerful breeds and will very likely develop an excellent, mutually respectful relationship with your big ole monster. My great relationship with dogs is due in no small part to my experience taking college courses on animal behavior and reading respected books/studies/journal articles on dog training, canine body language, and the human-dog relationship. I will be cautious and respectful towards your dog (especially when we first meet) to get us off on the right foot. Dogs tend to "sense that I'm a dog person" within moments of meeting me. Dogs, especially large and giant breeds, have been a passion of mine for my entire life. I am adopting my own puppy later this year, and intend to use Rover to help save money for her care -- and to get some doggie bonding time in while I wait for my puppy.

Per usual, Damen is the best out there. Treats our girl with tons of love (and treats). We’ll keep booking him as long as he takes reservations!

Damen is a fantastic sitter. Took care of my English Mastiff and Great Dane and was very communicative about any issues. Highly recommend.

Damen is absolutely fantastic with our dog, who is not always the easiest pup to handle. He is extremely knowledgeable about dog behavior and psychology, and will go above and beyond in making sure that your dog is cared for in your absence.

Damen stayed with our dog, Archie, for an extended weekend. We came home to a very happy and tired pup. We felt really comfortable leaving Archie with Damen (and would do so again) because of his attention to detail and obvious care of animals. Damen sent regular text updates throughout the stay. I would certainly recommend Damen as a dog sitter / walker!

Information Damen C. would like to know about your pet

I would prefer to know the status of the dog's leash training, whether it's inclined to jump or kiss faces (don't mind at all, would just prefer to know what to expect), if it is an affectionate cuddler or prefers personal space, how they tend to react to other dogs (or squirrels, rats) while on a walk, things like that.

A typical day

I live near baseball and soccer fields that are often empty. Plenty of space to run and walk around or throw a ball. My building has a small dog park we could visit for socialization and play time. I have also found that dogs love walking along the Anacostia Trail and the Southwest Waterfront. I've raised calm dogs and hyper dogs, aloof dogs and social dogs. I'm happy to take your dog on whatever type of walk they prefer, be that slow and solo or playful and social.
