A Lifetime Pet Lover Willing and Wanting to Help

Pet care experience

My experience working with dogs is extensive, having had them as pets for 20 years of my life. At my childhood home we have 4 dogs and 1 cat in the house- so an absolute a madhouse! I have been relied on to walk, feed and bathe the dogs under my care and have house sat multiple friends and family pets. I specialise in the care of small-medium size dogs as this is where my experience lies but I would be happy to look after larger dogs if you don't mind the occasional foray onto google. I have also looked after a dog with epilepsy so i have experience giving regular and emergency medication when necessary. I have looked after 4 litters of puppies and a litter of kittens, toilet training them and teaching basic skills such as sit, fetch and return. We even had to bottle feed one litter of puppies as the mother was not producing milk so I understand the full time care and responsibility that owners require to keep their pets safe and happy.

Clara is an absolutely wonderful sitter. We’d never used a housesitter before so were a little nervous as we needed some doggy care over our wedding, but meeting Clara put us at ease right away. Clara took the time to meet with us beforehand to make sure we were happy, ask us all about our dog’s needs and see the house. We weren’t worried once about leaving Clara at home with Sasha. Sasha also LOVED Clara! Thank you so much!

Clara was brilliant. She came to meet Tess before her stay, so that we and Tess felt comfortable with the stop over. Clara gave us updates on how Tess was doing over our weekend away … I would recommend Clara as a wonderful dog cater !

Clara was brilliant. Great communication in the lead up to sitting my puppy and she was brilliant with him when she looked after him. Highly recommended!

Safety, trust & environment

In my home dogs will be treated like part of the family, given lots of love hugs and attention but still discipline when needed. I like to provide each with a safe space using soft furnishings or a crate if possible so they can retreate of needed. Usually I will crate dogs at night or if I leave the house, which is not often. They are fed and walked (for at least 30 minutes) twice a day, once in the morning and once at night with their regular food. Water is, of course, constantly available and the back door to the garden is open whenever possible. Though I should note that I let dogs out at least once every 2 hours so they can do their business and if a garden is not available then I would take the dog out on the lead outside. In regards to discipline, I usually prefer the carrot over the stick, rewarding dogs when they have done well with first treats and later just a clicker or toy. However if punishment is necessary I would only ever tap the dog on the nose and state a firm no, hitting is never required. For example, if the dog has urinated in the house, I would sharply tap them on the nose, state no, putting their nose in their urine and then simply place them where they need to be - usually outside or on a toilet training area (e.g. newspaper). In regards to safety while walking, I would either use a harness or collar and a non-extendable lead. A dog would not be left off a lead until I have walked with them at least 5 times and built a relationship with them to avoid the dog running off or back home. I usually go to a green area nearby when walking the dogs and like to let them run around wherever possible in the garden, often leaving the door open so they can run in and out. I do of course recognise that all owners have different methods for providing a home for their furry pet so I would defer to whatever rules are already in place with whomever I am hired by.

Information Clara G. would like to know about your pet

Its important for me that I can give the best possible care to your dog. To do so I require a few bits of information - their age, sex and size. It would also be ideal if you could tell me how frequently they expect walks/toilet breaks and whether there any aspects of their daily routine that cannot be changed. Importantly, please let me know if your dog has any medication or specific treatments they require.

A typical day

With dogs that I watch, walks would typically consist of a stroll through the local woods or park. There is a winding path for dogs with limited mobility and a large green open space with plenty of room for them to run around. I usually take some kind of toy or ball to take full advantage of the space and let your dog wear off some energy. I would follow the walk with a treat and some fuss before sorting out the daily nosh. For those dogs that I stay with or stay with me, the day inside will be a mixture of letting them sit on my lap as I'm working and playing with their toy of choice. I would try to keep them company the whole day, keeping their spirits up until their families join them again.
