Certified Professional Dog Trainer

Pet care experience

October 2022 - Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed: I've been working professionally with dogs of all ages and sizes for three years now. I've helped run 25 dog play-groups, assisted with in person group behavior classes, and have over 800 hours of puppy and adolescent dog training under my belt. This lead me to take and pass the certification exam for the CPDT-KA through the CCPDT. This means that I not only know my stuff when it comes to training behaviors, but that I know just what it means to be a dog, and most importantly, how to best care for one. In addition, it means that I have a strong understanding of how dogs learn, and how I can take advantage of this without using force, fear, or coercion. Evidence-based, positive reinforcement dog training methods are my go to strategy. They work and lead us to having stronger bonds with our best buddies. I hope to use this platform to continue my dog training career, offering day training, drop ins, and private training to better the lives that people share with their beloved pets. In addition to my professional experience at Doggy Business LLC (moving from Portland to Salem recently meant we had to part ways), I have cared for my own family's and close friends dogs for years. Growing up with two large sheep dogs and then eventually adopting my sweet mutty labrador mix taught me a lot about how dogs behave differently and each have different needs. Whether your dog is a herding dog, a gun dog, a guardian dog, a toy dog, or a natural/world dog, I know what they need to live their best enriched lives. So if you're looking for some exceptional care and fun training experiences for your dog, you've come to the right place. I love dogs, love training, and can't wait to meet your best pal. Behaviors that I can work on - Jumping, Polite Greetings, Loose Leash Walking, Coming when Called, Settle/Stays, Leave it, and plenty of other essential doggy skills.

Our pup Lita was in the best care with Caleb at our house. We had not left her with anyone for quite some time, and we felt completely at ease while we were away. Caleb sent us updates, photos, and took excellent care of our home. All of our interactions were timely, detailed and clear. We will surely book Caleb again in the future.

Safety, trust & environment

Your dog's safety and well being is my primary concern. During training I will take every step to make sure they are comfortable and safe; without those two things, learning and training won't happen. This means no off-leash walks outside the home, supervision and extra handling at the dog park (I ran 25 dog playgroups and wrangled/managed dog play for 1500 hours), on-leash greetings with other dogs only if both dogs and people are interested. I've spent a long time learning how to read dog's body language, and I use it to help keep myself and your pet safe. In addition to this, the right equipment is important for keeping everyone safe and comfortable. I will not be using prong collars, E-collars, or slip collars. I want training to be enjoyable for your dog, so if you need me to I can provide recommendations for you, and I will have equipment that I can use on your dog during training sessions. Recommended walking training equipment for strong pullers/reactive dogs/distracted dogs: 1. 2Hounds Freedom No Pull Harness. 2. Wonder Walker harness. 3. Gentle Leader Head Halter - (I can slowly work on your dogs association with this to the point where they'll love wearing it)

Information Caleb G. would like to know about your pet

1. Is your dog comfortable around new people/dogs/places? 2. Have you done any training before? 3. What breed is it? I'll work with any breed (though I do have a soft spot for Labrador retrievers) 4. How old is your dog? If under 1 year old, see additional questions below. 5. What are your primary training goals? 6. Does your dog have any medical stuff I should know about? 7. Any dietary restrictions? Puppy and Adolescent Dog Questions - 1. Vaccination Status - any training/boarding/walks hosted at my apartment must be with fully vaccinated puppies or dogs. I do not know the vaccination status of the other dogs around the property so I won't put any puppies at risk by walking them around risky areas. 2. Socialization Experience - how many dogs/puppies/people have they met? 3. Training preferences - verbal cues, side preference for walking, etc.

A typical day

In short, I try to keep your dog's schedule as close to as normal as possible when sitting. A new person can be stressful for dogs, and being without their people can make that worse. You can expect leashed walks as enrichment if the weather is reasonable, or shorter potty walks during yucky rainy days. And on those days where the weather might make a walk less fun, I've got countless enrichment options for your pets. Training, long term consumables, puzzle toys, and scent focused games. For shorter training session drop ins (1-2 hours), the structure will be as follows: Introduction with evaluation - making sure your dog is comfortable around me while alone in the home. Warm up training - gets your dog in the mood to train and helps me determine how to motivate your dog. Skill focused training - your selected behavior, I will work on this throughout the session with breaks in between to work on other skills and play games to make training more fun. Training break - various long term consumable (stuffed kong, stuffed chew, licky mat, food toy) to give their brains a break. If your pet likes a good cuddle session this is a great time for one. Impulse control training - dogs of all ages can use practice on these skills (leave it, recall, working around distractions). Skill Focused - your selected behavior. Fun Training - Tricks aren't only fun to train with your dog, but they also can continue to build that positive bond we're trying to forge between the two of you. Training sessions will include short how-to videos and a small write up on how to work on the skills practiced during the session.
