Animal Care Student

Pet care experience

I've had animals such as cats, dogs, guinea pigs and fish al throughout my life. I have been trusted to look after animals ranging from cats and dogs to llamas of family and friends and alongside this, I was given the opportunity to study animal care at Askham Bryan College and from this, I have my level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management and I have my Foundation Degree in animal behaviour, welfare and conservation from Wrexham University. I am currently in the process of completing my Bachelors degree in Applied Animal Behaviour, Welfare and Conservation at Wrexham University. I currently study 2 days a week and would love the chance to work in a field that ties in with my studies. I currently work as a Support Worker for people with learning disabilities and whilst this isn't animal related, I hope that it gives you an idea of who I am as a person.

Safety, trust & environment

I wouldn't be able to have animals within my own home as I live in a student accommodation that doesn't allow animals however, as it is important to me that animals receive the best care possible, I would make it a necessity to meet the animals and owners prior to my service being chosen. This is important to me and I would like to ensure that owners are happy and that the pets are comfortable with me or have the chance to become comfortable prior to me providing care. This also allows me to visit the animal in their space and allow them to get to know me and for me to get to know them and their character. When providing walks for your pets, I will ensure that all appropriate gear is used e.g. stronger harnesses for stronger dogs. I will also require dog seatbelts for dogs who enjoy longer walks so that I may take them in my car to longer public walks.

Information Caitlin J. would like to know about your pet

I require a meet and greet before looking after any animal cat or dog and want to know diets, daily routines e.g. feeding times and walking times, any routines that the animal is used to e.g. night time routines, any triggers for the animal that may cause distress, their behaviour on a lead, how they interact with other dogs and any other information the owner wishes to share with me that is useful.

A typical day

I will take your dogs on long walks and they are 100% guaranteed to have plenty of cuddles and snuggles unless they aren't comfortable with it. Happy to take dogs to dog fields where they have the freedom to roam and run about and burn energy from 30 mins to 1 hour. Plenty of treats given (within moderation and approval of owners) in a way that provides mental stimulation e.g. puzzle feeders and snuffle mats.
