SF Native & Professional Dancer

Pet care experience

My name is Bradford, and I was born and raised in SF. I'm an SF- and LA-based choreographer, educator, performer, researcher, DEI & accessibility consultant, and audio describer for dance. I was laid off during pandemic from AXIS Dance Company, the nation's leading physically integrated dance company of dancers with and without disabilities. My family has had a dog since 2011, a 20-pound American Eskimo, Canaan, and Pomeranian mix (among others) who now wears a diaper and who we take to the beach every weekend. I've also spent my whole life playing with and sitting relatives' and friends' dogs and cats. Over the past several years, I've lived with a number of pets belonging to my housemates, including taking in my friend's cuddly cat, Lyla, while he was studying abroad. Most recently (during pandemic), I spent eight months as a live-in petsitter/housesitter for someone in SF, during which time I took care of a special needs (blind, hip dysplasia) American pit bull terrier and a healthy cat as well as cleaned and maintained the property. My friends have often called me a dog/cat whisperer with their pets. (Unfortunately, I am not actually like the Dog Whisperer.) I have a quiet, patient, warm persona which draws in a lot of pets (dogs and cats alike) I come across, and I become playful with them after they've warmed up to me. This is not to say though that - with dogs at least - I let myself be walked over and am not firm with them. As a professional dancer and a former volleyball player, I am relatively fit and very active, so I am less likely to be yanked away by sudden movements caused by freak accidents or "spookings", particularly with larger dogs (in comparison to walkers/sitters with smaller, more petite statures or less active lifestyles). I am a former freelancer and still seek out a lot of independent work outside of my company work, so more than others, I understand the importance of following directions and requests completely through and ensuring that tasks are done well. This includes attention to our pets and their various needs and preferences!

Bradford is a pleasure to work with. Scheduling was a breeze, and he is very communicative. He also sent pictures every day, which I greatly appreciated.

Such a great dog sitter! Both of my dogs love Bradford, and he is very responsive and attentive. He also left my home cleaner than he found it. Overall, can’t recommend highly enough.

Information Bradford C. would like to know about your pet

Before sitting your pet, I would want to know if there are any specific actions, commands, and/or treats which can grab and maintain their attention (particularly on walks if something happens which distracts them and I need to guide them and their attention away from whatever has happened). I would also want to know if there are certain breeds with whom they do not get along. (For example, our family dog has a huge dislike for boxers; we don't know why.) With sitting either dogs or cats, knowing their morning/wake-up and evening/pre-sleep routine would be helpful for me and my scheduling, and knowing their household behaviors/quirks (for example, if they have a tendency to chew on socks or shoes) would help me with knowing how to pack and carry myself in your home (like whether to make sure all of my socks and shoes are hidden away or if they're safe being left out).

A typical day

My defaults are to go on walks in the surrounding neighborhood and to go to dog parks or the beach for fun activity/play time. Even if your pet is well-trained and can be off leash for walks, for the purposes of safety, I would prefer to walk with your pet leashed since your pet and I will not have as deep a relationship or understanding as you do with them. For activity/play time, I am super happy to play fetch with them, and I enjoy having pets socialize and play with each other if their temperament and the environment allows. I am totally happy to oblige with specific requests, especially since each pet has their own preferences and unique personality.
