I connect easily with dogs. We understand each other. They feel safe with me. I have stray dogs show up at my house or come up to me when I'm out walking all the time. It's as if they know I will help them find their way home, which I always do even if it will make me late for work. Dogs are very important to me, and I have always felt like their protector. In the past, I had 6 dogs of my own and still took care of my friends' and landlord's dogs when they went out of town. Even with up to 10 dogs in my house at one time, I never had any issues. Everyone stayed calm, relaxed, and happy! Dogs need structure, boundaries, and a calm, assertive owner/sitter to feel safe and relaxed in their surroundings. They also need love and affection and to have their needs met. They are a lot like children. To me, they are my children. : ) I take classes in the mornings, but I am only gone for 2-4 hours each morning. After that, I always head home to walk my dogs and spend time with them before I have to study or do house work. I am usually home the rest of the day. When I do have to leave, I turn on some nice soothing music for the dogs so they don't get lonely or anxious. Also, before I leave the house, I spend a couple of minutes with each dog one-on-one. I hold them, pet them, and tell them how much I love them and that I will be back soon. They seem to understand because usually they will go lay down after that and take a nap.
