I don't remember a time in my life not having animals in the house. Going to college was the only time I've been away from pets. I've had big dogs, small dogs, protective dogs and dogs that love everyone, as well as cats, fish, a turtle, and rabbits. While I love all animals, they love me as well. I'm one of the lucky people that just has that special connection with them. I currently have two of my own, and given that we're in an apt, I'd rather watch additional furbabies in their own homes. This benefits all involved. Your pets get to remain in their normal environment, minimizing stress, and none of them have to worry about being crowded. Lastly, my dogs sleep with me, so I have no issues with dog snuggles!
