Experienced pre-vet dog handler
Pet care experience
Hi! My name is Amelia and I’m a recent pre-vet college graduate with a degree in neurobiology. I’ve been training, grooming, and showing dogs for over 10 years, both recreationally and professionally. I was one of the top handlers in the country throughout my career as a Junior Handler in the AKC, repeatedly qualifying me for the National Championship in Orlando and Westminster in NYC. Outside of showing, I love horseback riding, training my dogs in obedience/agility, and working as a therapy dog team for the ATD. As a pre-vet student, I have a great deal of experience with medication administration (both oral medications and injections), wound care, nutrition, and general health care including nail clipping and teeth scaling. I also work full-time as a veterinary assistant at one of the top hospitals in Manhattan, so you can rest assured that my experience is well-founded. I professionally groom terrier breeds (using the traditional hand-stripping technique, no clipping), but I’m also skilled at grooming many other breeds as a result of my extensive work as an assistant to AKC-registered professional handlers, and as a handler myself. I have a lot of experience with raising puppies, as I’m also a breeder of Norwich and Border Terriers, and I’m comfortable caring for elderly dogs’ specific needs. With thousands of hours of experience, I’m very attuned to canine behavior as well as indicators of illness, discomfort, choking, seizure etc. I’m a confident handler and trainer, so I’m very comfortable with strong-willed dogs. The breeds I have most experience with include Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Dobermans, all terrier breeds, Giant Schnauzers, Bulldogs, Pugs, Collies, Cavaliers, Keeshonds, Pharaoh Hounds, Poodles, Goldens, and Dachshunds. For boarding purposes, I do require that the dog be dropped off and picked up by the owner, as I do not have a car, and I require the dog come with a fabric or wire crate that fits their size so that they may be crated during short periods when I am not in the house. I look forward to meeting you and your four-legged family member(s)!
Reviews
Thank you for your flexibility and for taking Cinder on a grand adventure! Its great for her to have these “off road” experiences.
Great walk, Cinder was all tuckered out! Amelia is the best.
As always, Amelia is the best! You can completely trust your adult dog or puppy with her. She’s very knowledgeable and caring!
Amelia is so great! She doesn’t just “babysit,” she knows training and care inside and out. We feel lucky to have found her!

If your pet is in my care, you can be confident that they are being attended to frequently (with walks, play, and enrichment), consistently, and with the utmost kindness and respect. I always minimize the amount of time I’m away from your pet, but if necessary, I will crate while I’m out. I am a big believer in crates for the safety the pet when boarding in my home because when an animal does not know the space (and gets anxious when left, even for brief periods of time), it only takes one accident to cause a dangerous situation for that pet. I love providing healthy, frozen kongs as a fun busy toy/treat, so please let me know your pet’s dietary restrictions and if you give me permission to do this for them :)

Information Amelia S. would like to know about your pet
I don’t have any breed preferences, as I’m very comfortable handling all breeds, but I have an extra soft spot for terriers, Dobermans, and Ridgebacks :) It would be great for me to know any commands you use, any specific things your dog likes, any triggers your dog has, if they’re dog-aggressive or aggressive towards people, if they have any allergies or foods that upset their stomach, and if they bark or whine excessively when left alone (separation anxiety). If you have an intact male who marks, please provide me with a belly band. I do require that all dogs come with their own crate that fits their size so that they may be crated during short intervals when I am out of the home. As a result, they must be crate trained.
A typical day
I love training, so I’d be happy to spend a bit of time working on a new command like sit, stay, heel, or leave it, or a new trick like paw, left spin, right spin, or roll over. These are all fun ways to enrich any environment, but with my close proximity to Central Park, finding a quiet place to work one-on-one or just allow for some exploration of the North woods is always fun. I also love creating a calm, secure environment for dogs who are boarding by playing yoga music and diffusing essential oils like lavender. I will be sure to look after your dog’s every need and then some.

Availability
Your pet will always be my priority, which is why I don’t offer daycare or boarding services during the weekdays while I’m at work. I can usually provide weekday evening walks from 6-8 pm, and on the weekends I’m much more flexible and can board, provide daycare, walk and do drop-ins at almost time.
