Paws, Collaborate and Listen <3
Pet care experience
Hellllloooooooo (Read like Mrs. Doubtfire) My name is Alyx and I have a passion for caring and nurturing both animals and people. My "headline" is exactly how I work. I collaborate and listen to your needs and the needs of your pet...while jamming to some 90s tunes. QUICK HOT NOTES- your pet who sleeps over at our house must… ✅ Be OK with cats (we have 3) ✅ Be OK with a semi-playful pup (10 mos old but also a basset hound so not incredibly active) Senior animals truly have my heart. My husband and I strictly rescue dogs and we have 3 cats. We recently said farewell to our 15 year old dachshund and have adopted a 9 month old Basset Hound. While we love our #oldguys we love the energy that gets injected into our home when we watch younger dogs. Recent History: My husband (and our zoo) moved to Portland in the summer of 2017. We both found jobs quickly, he in beer and me in pets! Working at a woman-owned, local, and integritous small business was SO FUN. Not to mention all of the cute pets that came to visit the store. I was hired as manager and worked there for one year before being promoted to a larger store. This was fantastic because I got to know more about small animals, reptiles, and my new favorite pet...Plants <3 I am a wealth of knowledge when it comes to pet nutrition and behavior but I will NOT offer unsolicited advice. Please ask me your tough questions and I will bring my 15 years of pet care experience to you and will advise you on what I believe to be the best solution. While I no longer work in pet retail, I am able to advise in lots of spaces. More background: My passion for animals began with my childhood pets, including various cats and dogs. My love for them expanded when I was in high school where I took a job as a ranch hand taking care of horses. It only grew in college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I was hired at the age of 21 as an Animal Caretaker at the Harlow Primate Lab. I was in charge of a team of students that enriched the life, diet, and well-being of over 500 Rhesus Macaques during my three years of employment there. Also while I was perusing my degrees in Psychology and Criminal Justice in college, I joined the team at a locally owned holistic animal supply, grooming, and doggy daycare facility, which has two locations, one of which I managed for 2yrs. I have worn every hat within the company including, pack leader in daycare, retail associate, dog bather and so the list goes on. While you are away, it can be difficult in boarding situations for dogs and cats. While you are away, the last thing that you should have to worry about is their well-being and care. Staying in our home lowers the stress for your pet and we absolutely dote on our temporary additions to our fur family. By staying in our home, you also are reducing their risk of injury and sickness that can be contracted in boarding facilities. We live near Revolution Hall with a great big (mostly) fenced meadow that we love to take our pet friends to. We allow them on furniture and everyone gets fed separately, out of an abundance of caution. We work with a positive reinforcement mindset. Any dogs staying with us need to be OK with our kitties. We are very open to a "trial run" with the cats if you are nervous about them or if you aren't sure how your dog will do with them. From my experience, the dogs tend to be very interested and the cats could not care less. They just stay up high in their many hiding places. Favorite breed: Rescue Pets in home: Kevin (DLH Black-Elusive, age 13), Steve (Orange Tabby- not the brightest bulb but SO cute, age 10), and Georgie (DSH Orange and White.-Naughty and adorbs, age 3). Uploading pictures to this platform is kind of a pain, take a look at my Instagram to get to know me a little better! @thebestalyxever Anything else you need, let me know!

Alyx has watched our pet cats multiple times and does a fantastic job! She is very communicative, friendly and spends time getting to know the animals and interacting with them accordingly. Highly recommend!
Alyx was amazing as always. For nearly two years we’ve trusted her with our fur baby and she always delivers. Seriously, book her today.

How I work- Drop-ins for Cats: Cats are absolute enigmas...and they are my favorite. Just like my passion for psychology and the law, they exist in the grey area which I just love. When I am caring for your cat, they completely lead the way. They don't have to be my best pal (though I desperately want them to). In fact, some of the cats that I drop in on regularly stay in hiding. When I arrive, I announce myself and usually bring some approved snacks for bribing. I then turn on a podcast with two people talking. I find that most cats like to be around the "action" in the house but don't like to be directly involved in the action. Listening to conversations often interests the cats enough to come out of hiding long enough for them to see me and for me to let them know that they are safe while I am in the house. While spending time with your animal, I will also bring in mail, water plants, and take out garbage and will send you pictures, as you wish, of your happy pet! I am happy to accommodate any special needs, medications, and behavioral oddities. You name it, I've seen it :) Drop-ins/walks for Dogs: Like my care for cats, the pup leads the way! While I use my doggy daycare experience to calmly control the household, I never force them to do anything. If they don't want to play, we don't play. If they don't want to walk far, we don't walk far. You can bet that they will get sooooooo much love, pets, and approved snacks. I have worked with dogs that are food possessive, leash agresive and, just unpredictable in general. Again, I will NOT give any unsolicited advice but I am happy to help where I can if asked. We avoid the dog park with our pals as some dogs are unpredictable and I'd rather not stress your dog out any more than a sleepover cause.

Information Alyx W. would like to know about your pet
With all of the dogs that I watch, I prefer to know if they have flea and tick coverage. Also I like to know any nervous habits during weather or around strange dogs, the vacuum, or children. Additionally, I like to know if we are able to go to the dog park, hiking or swimming.
A typical day
We live in a great neighborhood and we love to explore and we walk almost everywhere. Many of the restaurants near us are all dog friendly and we love showing off our fur friends.

Availability
I am back in the office these days but it is a dog friendly office! I have a door in my office if my guest doggo isn’t a fan of others. My husband is in sales and is frequently home during the day. It would be no problem to accommodate potty breaks every 4 hours. The following are questions that are very helpful to know in advance: Does your dog have any triggers while walking? (skateboards, cats, squirrels, etc.) Does your dog have any allergies? Food or otherwise? Do you have a local emergency contact if you are unavailable? (Most folks just say vet) How long can your dog be left alone? Do they prefer a kennel or would they be more comfortable in the bathroom? How does your dog do in the car? (We like to take pups with us to run errands 🤗) Any other quirks we should know about...
