From Petey to Hooch I ❤ every pooch

Pet care experience

I grew up in Colombia (South America) with a grumpy, family Miniature Schnauzer, Ruffo, and upon graduating college became the proud companion of a wonderful, show-winning Boston Terrier, Nia, and later on of a lovable, but terrifying Pitbull, Bonita (who looked just like Beast, of Sandlot renown). Throughout college, I petsat for friends and family and routinely took care of my professor's very seniorly and very whimsical mixed-breed cat, my roommate's tropical saltwater aquarium tank, and my neighbor's 3-dog-strong Cocker Spaniel horde. Mostly because I enjoyed it, but also because, coincidentally, they would always just happen to leave behind a six-pack of Saranac beer in their fridge during those holidays when I would petsit! I recently moved back to NYC this December and am excited to try out Rover. I love dogs of all shapes and sizes (although I do tend to enjoy more the athletic breeds) and am just as happy to go jogging with a quadruped partner as I am to stay at home and watch a movie. Nia and I would go jogging around Central Park and she even finished a couple of 10K races. I am comfortable with and encourage giving treats and using other positive reinforcements techniques to reward good behavior and instill proper dog manners. Nia, Bonita, Shadow, Greta, and Lola were all trained by me. I taught them basic commands and even some party tricks, but that's a story for another day. I'll be the first to admit, though, the results were mixed - Bonita had me throwing my hands in the air and pulling out my hairs for the first few weeks (read months), Nia made it into an indie film!

Alvaro has watched my dog, Gracie, several times and he is phenomenal with her. She can be a bit of a challenge, as she's only 16 months old, but the patience and kindness he displays with her puts my mind at ease and gives me comfort leaving her with him. I would highly recommend Alvaro to anyone in need of help with their dog.

Alvaro loves dogs, and dogs love Alvaro! I trust him with my dog 100 percent. He is patient, kind, and truly has a good heart! He has spent a lot of time with my dog, Greta, and I think she loves him more than me now!! Hehe He has a history of training dogs and often brags about his former dog Nia, who was a show dog. :) Anyone would be lucky to have him walk or spend time with their pet. You won't have to worry about them for one second. Alvaro is also flexible to the dog's schedule and rules that you may have that you don't want to break. Highly recommend Alvaro!!!!!

I think that, for dogs and people, the key to good relationships is to have a clear and well-established set of rules and boundaries. It doesn't matter what these are, as long as they are clear to both parties and enforced fairly and evenly. With the dogs I lived with, they knew they were allowed to go anywhere in the house (including my bed and furniture) but they knew they were not allowed to exit the house without my permission. When on a leash, they knew to walk by my right side and, when off leash, knew to wait for me to tell them before running off. If your pet has any clear, unbreakable rules (like, not allowed on the bed, not allowed in the room, no barking, sitting down before eating, etc.) these would be good to know so I can continue with the behavioral conditioning. Also, any pathological animosities (real or perceived) or responses to other animals or inanimate objects would be good to know. Nia would go crazy and take it as a personal affront when she saw pigeons standing by the window sill. Shadow goes crazy when any person apporoaches the plastic grocery bags used for garbage. I'm still trying to figure out the why for both of these. Also, would be good to know if they're allowed treats, human food, any allergies, etc.

A typical day

Whatever the fellow is up to, we can do. Walk around the neighborhood. Hit up the bars at the park (horizontal gym bars, of course). Catch up with the soap opera du jour. Watch (Re-watch) Ghost wreak it in the Lannister camp. Or, my favorite activity of all, hide his favorite toy under the couch cushion and have him spend hours trying to get it while I sip my coffee, read a sci-fi/fantasy book, and encourage him on.
