Growing up we always had both cats and dogs and I developed a love for any sort of furry animal from a very young age. I've grown up taking care of both smaller dogs (e.g. shitzhu/ poodle mixes) and larger (golden retrievers). I would take both my dog and the next-door neighbors' dogs on walks around the neighborhood after school, etc. and grew very comfortable watching the dogs when my family went out of town. After moving away for graduate school, I began to miss my dog instantaneously. Luckily, my family friend decided, on a whim, to adopt two labrador retriever puppies within several months of each other. They are now about 1 1/2 and 2 years old, and I still tend to go over once or twice a week to help walk them. In addition, I've stayed at their house numerous times while they were out of town for weeks at a time and have cared for them on my own. I've also volunteered as a dog-walker and dog-socializer at the SPCA for the past 6 mo. to a year. It's so rewarding getting to interact with dogs that really need love and affection, and it makes me so happy to make their lives easier, if only for the day that they're with us. Given that some of the dogs that come in have special needs and considerations when it comes to loud noises, interacting with other people and dogs, and being alone, I would say I am now very comfortable with, and capable of taking care of, a very wide range of dogs.
