Pet-loving PhD student

Pet care experience

I'm a lifelong pet lover and current PhD student who is sadly unable to have a dog at the moment and who misses having canine companionship, particularly on daily walks/runs. I grew up in MA in a house full of all kinds of animals (dogs, cats, birds, horses...), and currently have one cat of my own. I'm an experienced pet sitter, and have a history of working with senior pets and pets who have special medical needs, including those who require subcutaneous or intramuscular injections as well as oral medications. I started walking dogs (other than my family's) at age 8, when I got an after school job walking an elderly golden retriever named Friend. In the intervening years, I've been lucky enough to gain a lot of experience with a wide variety of dogs including large breeds (e.g. Bernese Mountain Dogs, German Shepherds, etc), energetic working breeds who need to run (e.g. Australian Kelpies, Border Collies), and dog-selective dogs. And although I love all dogs, I do have a particular soft spot for those shyer dogs who take a bit of time and patience to warm up to new people-- they remind me of the dog my family had for the majority of my childhood, and I'm always willing to take as long as they need (and as many treats as they need!) to win their trust. And as a cat owner myself, I'm of course also always excited to get the chance to do drop-in visits for cats!

Safety, trust & environment

I have a lifetime of experience with animals of all different personality types, and always let the pet set the tone of an interaction. For outgoing, friendly pets I love to engage in active playtime or give lots of love and attention as needed, but am also just as willing to spend time just quietly hanging out and "being present" for pets who need a little bit more time to come out of their shells or just prefer a more low-key interaction.

Information Alexa H. would like to know about your pet

Please let me know if your dog has any particular needs, preferences, or funny personality quirks that I should be aware of! Does your dog like faster paced walks (or even runs?), or do they prefer to mosey along and take their time? Is your dog afraid of anything that we might encounter during a normal walk (loud trucks, other dogs, etc)? Does your dog have a tendency to take off after a particularly tempting-looking squirrel? Essentially, I want to know anything that will help me make your dog's experience safer and more enjoyable!

A typical day

I really enjoy finding ways to tailor each walk or visit to the individual dog's preferences. For some dogs, that means a slow meander through the park where we stop so that they can sniff every bush. For others, it means a vigorous (leashed!) game of fetch or seeing how fast we can dash across an open green space. For dogs who aren't easily overwhelmed by larger crowds, I always enjoy taking a walk along the water!

As a PhD student, I have a lot of flexibility in my schedule, particularly on weekdays! I'm able to visit pets or take dogs on long walks during normal working hours, and am also able to be available for pets who require late-night care.
