Availability
My primary job is running an environmental and educational consultancy business, which affords me a flexible schedule to take on new clients. From time to time, I'll take on jobs relevant to my field, such as a Professor role at UCSD. Given that I am regularly working, I charge a $25-fee for each last-minute booking (within 48-hours) to account for changing my schedule. Please also note that house-sitting is priced for overnight stays from 9pm to 8am (negotiable), but includes the cost of a basic drop-in during the daytime for one dog only; let me know your needs and I can modify pricing on my end. (Please note that any client located further than a 20-minute round-trip drive from my home near downtown will have a $15 surcharge added for each visit, increasing to $30 for those around 40-60 minutes.)

I require meeting all new clients for a free meet-and-greet before I'll accept house-sitting bookings. All animals will be kept on a secure leash when outside of the home and must have proof of up-to-date vet records by the time of the meet-and-greet. For health and safety reasons, I do not take clients' animals to dog parks. I charge extra to allow clients' animals in my vehicle.
Information Alex T. would like to know about your pet
Please let me know what your animal needs to maintain their best possible health and welfare while I'm looking after them. I have extensive experience caring for animals with a wide range of needs, from bottle-fed newborns to seniors under hospice, so I'm prepared to help within reason. I have no breed or species restrictions.
A typical day
I will talk to you during a meet-and-greet about what activities your animals enjoy. I make sure to provide plenty of enrichment to keep them physically and psychologically stimulated, from toys to training games. Unless we speak and emphasize other goals, I will prioritize your animals' needs; for instance, if your dog wants to stop and sniff everything, I will make sure to take them on a safe route for a walk where they can.

Pet care experience
New to Ithaca! I'm a professional animal behaviorist and trainer with over 25 years experience caring for animals including dogs, cats, birds, domesticated small animals, livestock, and exotic species, from primates to marine mammals to elephants. I'm an expert in animal welfare and trained in pet CPR/First Aid, having started with disaster response efforts rescuing pets after Hurricane Katrina and later taken veterinary technology courses at Purdue. As a former zookeeper at the world-famous Central Park Zoo, I know how to keep animals clean and will make sure your pets stay tidy while you're gone. I moved to Ithaca in June from San Diego, where I was teaching at UCSD; before that, I lived in Alaska, where I served as the Chair for my Animal Control Commission. I will always treat your animals like my own and dedicate time to their emotional as well as physical well-being; I have an assortment of toys and treats I am willing to share if your animals aren't destructive. I always work on basic manners refreshers, but am also available to help you reach more advanced training goals after a consultation. Clients requesting drop-ins or house-sitting have the option of also adding on dedicated training sessions. IMPORTANT NOTES: * I require meet-and-greets for all new clients. * I won't accept requests where dogs won't be walked at least three times a day or where other animals aren't being visited at least daily. * Drop-ins include basic care only. Walks are for dogs with pre-existing leash manners. For special services outside standard care, extra fees will apply. For behavioral or training work, I will need to book at the training hourly rate, which includes substantially more help. * Please note that any client located further than a 20-minute round-trip drive from my home near downtown will have a $15 surcharge added for each visit, increasing to $30 for those around 40-60 minutes. I use Google Maps to estimate this and confirm during the free meet-and-greet before booking requests are finalized. * I charge a $25-fee for each last-minute booking (within 48-hours) to account for changes to my schedule. * If free parking is not available, appropriate parking costs will be added to the booking before confirmation.

Reviews

Due to Alex's extensive background in animal care, I felt very comfortable leaving my cat in Alex's care for drop in visits during a 9 day trip! Alex was meticulous with following the rules of Rover and had careful business practices, such as staying on platform for all communication and waiting to accept the booking until after our meet and greet went well. Alex was also meticulous with Mocha's care. I have some very complicated instructions for the care of this finicky senior kitty (special food prep, pills, tooth brushing, recording amount of food consumed) and Alex did a great job following them! As an added bonus, Alex even cleaned the floor around Mocha's food bowl without my asking! Would hire this sitter again. Thank you Alex!

Alex did a great job taking care of our cat! He was in frequent communication and also kept us up to date on things around our house etc. Also took some great photos of our cat 😺. Would definitely recommend to a friend and would be happy having Alex car sit again!

Alex was great coming over and getting to know our dog. Our dog gets nervous with strangers and can be reactive but our dog was very calm with him on a joint walk. He really understands multiple dog behaviors and shared many suggestions and advice for us. It is highly apparent the care he has for animals. I look forward to continuing to work with Alex.

Thanks for the great walk and all the helpful training pointers Alex! So nice meeting you.
