Lots of Love & Experience ❤️

Pet care experience

Caring for animals has been my greatest passion since I was a little boy, and I'm so grateful to have made it my career! To do this full-time, I've developed specialized skills to provide excellent care for the pets I love. I carry safety equipment and am trained in advanced protocols like first aid/CPR and behavior modification. I take the time to learn about your pet(s), home, and preferences so I can tailor my care to your needs. Bonding with animals is my #1 source of joy, and this work is so much more than just a job to me. ▶ PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE ◀ I have nearly a decade of professional experience training, grooming, exercising, feeding, and administering medication to animals. I started by working at a barn and volunteering for a rescue as a teenager. In 2016, I began dog walking and pet sitting, and I've never looked back. At a daycare in DC, I was responsible for 20-60 off-leash dogs at one time. The business owner, an expert trainer, taught me critical skills to prevent emergencies and save lives. I understand complex dog behaviors and anticipate problems before they happen. I have experience with a wide variety of breeds, ages, and species (rabbits, rodents, fish, birds, and reptiles). I’ve cared for hundreds of pets with medical conditions and behavioral challenges like reactivity, separation anxiety, resource guarding, etc. I know how to compassionately communicate with them and keep everyone safe. ▶ PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ◀ I've had pets (cats, dogs, fish, frogs, and mice) since I was a kid. As an adult, I spent a year fostering cats/kittens, then adopted a cat with chronic health issues. He needed meds multiple times a day until he passed 5 years later, so I know how hard it is to be away from a pet who needs careful attention. I’ll always send photos and detailed updates to ease any worries!

We used Alex as a cat sitter for a previous, shorter trip and he wowed us then. This time we were gone for 6 days and we never felt concerned that our cats weren’t getting top notch care. Alex provided funny and adorable updates, with photos throughout. Alex also took special care to provide our one cat his required medicines. All around professional and a joy to interact with!

It’s always a good day for our puppy Leia when she’s with Alex. We’re so happy that she has a human she trusts to care of her when we’re not there. Thank you as always, Alex!

Safety, trust & environment

My heart breaks when clients share horror stories of past sitters who didn't put in the effort or simply didn't have the experience to know what emergencies to prepare for. If you've been through that, I'm so, so sorry your pet didn't get the care they deserved. I can promise you I'm committed to doing everything I can to give your pet a super fun time while prioritizing their wellbeing and safety. Active prevention is my #1 strategy to avoid health or safety issues, so I use many tactics to minimize risks. My work with a wide variety of animals across many different settings has prepared me to know which problems are common, what signs to watch out for, and how to proactively prevent incidents from starting or escalating. I'll ask you lots of questions about your pet's history and environment to help me anticipate potential issues and keep them safe. I keep detailed digital notes on all of my clients so that I can easily review them from my phone before/during visits and carefully follow all your instructions. Since I've worked with hundreds—if not thousands—of animals, I've created robust organizational systems to ensure I don't accidentally get anyone's care needs mixed up. For example, I'll check your pet's digital file to see what treats they can have before offering them a treat. My treats are divided in bags by common allergens, and I won't even give them my treats if you prefer I use yours or limit their intake. This kind of diligence across all my interactions with your pet dramatically reduces the risk of countless health and safety issues. And just to be extra cautious, I'm always prepared in the rare case of an emergency. Between my waterproof backpack and my shoulder pouch, I carry: ▶ SAFETY TOOLS ◀ - pet first aid kit - The Pet Corrector (breaks up a dog attack/fight with a startling noise that won't injure) - 911 Rescue Tool aka seatbelt cutter (quickly cuts a collar off without cutting your pet's neck—each year, tens of thousands of dogs die from collar strangulation accidents in everyday situations you'd never expect. I recommend everyone have a 911 Tool handy when your pet wears a collar. Most pet parents sadly haven't heard of it, but it truly saves lives and is much safer than a knife) - heavy-duty carabiners (to attach a dog to my belt or another location if I need my hands free) - flashlight - pepper spray - pet emergency blanket - extra leashes and a slip lead ▶ DOG WALK PREPAREDNESS ◀ On every walk, I stay alert and keep my phone in my pocket unless I'm taking a photo for you. I'm constantly keeping an eye on your dog for signs of anxiety and scanning our environment for potential risks such as chicken bones, vehicles, or something your dog is reactive to. By paying close attention to these details, I'm able to make sure your pet enjoys their time with me and returns safe and sound! If your dog is a strong leash puller, lunges, or has a history of running away, I'll wear my sturdy pack-walk belt with heavy-duty D-rings and locking, steel carabiners securing a high-quality leash that hasn't broken under the largest athletic dogs I've walked. In addition to holding your dog's usual leash in my hand, I keep my leash securely attached to my belt as a secondary, hands-free point of contact. Your dog won't be able to get away from me, and this method distributes any pulling between the leashes so it isn't all going to my shoulder. This allows me to stay balanced on my feet, even with massive dogs. I have other strategies to mitigate pulling like distraction, redirection, or avoidance of triggers (depending on the situation and your preferred approach—I always do my very best to honor the training approach the family uses). But if there's ever a situation where a trigger truly comes out of nowhere and your dog tries to bolt, they won't get away.

Information Alex S. would like to know about your pet

When you reach out, I'll send you my new client form and we'll set up a meet & greet to get to know each other! The form I created is informed by years of professional pet care experience with hundreds of different clients. I cover your pet's history, personality, preferences, fears, and medical conditions. I also ask about your home and neighborhood so I can tailor my visits to meet your unique needs Getting to know your pet ahead of time with these questions helps me show up fully prepared to take great care of your furry friend and keep them out of trouble! For example, if you have a dog, I'll ask you if they lunge at strollers so I'll know if I need to distract with treats, cross the street, and/or turn around if I see a stroller coming our way. It's much safer for me to know that ahead of time than to find out when we're a foot away from a small child. I can also practice any training you're doing with them to increase their confidence and reduce reactivity. These questions help me know what to prepare for and give you the opportunity to thoroughly communicate how you'd like me to care for your pet.

A typical day

I love offering pets both physical and mental enrichment! We'll have tons of fun playing with toys, sniffing out all the latest smells at the park, exploring the neighborhood, and practicing any training exercises you'd like me to work on. I love hiking in nature, so I'll even take high-energy dogs on hikes with lots of exciting sights and smells. If your pet enjoys physical affection, I'll be sure to ask you their favorite ways to be pet and give them lots and lots of love. Bonding with animals through play, snuggles, training, and trust is my favorite part of my job!

I care for pets full-time. I'm available for drop-ins and walks 7 days a week. When I'm overnight house sitting, I'll coordinate daytime visits around your pet's schedule, and I'll never be away for longer than your pet can comfortably be left alone. I do everything I can to maintain your pets' usual routines/expectations—including walks, food, water intake, treats, meds, enrichment, rules/training, and sleep (ex: they're welcome to sleep in the bed when I'm sitting if that's their norm, I love snuggles! 🥰) When I'm petsitting at your house, I send photos with written updates about what your pet's been up to at least once a day. If it's a drop-in or a walk, I'll message you photos and/or add them to the Rover Card with an update about how things went each visit. I know from personal experience how hard it can be to spend time away from your pets, and I'll do everything I can to give you peace of mind. You're welcome to text or call me at any time.
