Pet care experience

Hey, Rover community! My name is Alex (he/they) and I absolutely love dogs. Growing up with an 85-pound yellow lab, I fell in love with these gentle giants as a kid, and volunteered at the local animal shelter during high school. I have experience with various types of training, including crate training, teaching loose-leash walking, and doing socialization work in public places. Over the past two years, I have sat for dozens of clients, both through Rover and for family and friends. I also serve as a regular dog walker for several others. I am experienced with numerous breeds: from rescue mutts to the stigmatized Bully breeds, family dogs such as the Doodles, Pugs, Bulldogs, and Labrador Retriever, and herding dogs including the Corgi, Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, and Shetland Sheepdog, each dog has a unique personality! In the next couple of years, I hope to adopt a rescue myself, but right now, Rover gives me the chance to be around lots of different dogs despite my busy lifestyle!

Alex was great with our new puppy! He was able to accommodate a last minute booking and still made time for a meet and greet the day before her stay. He sent pictures and videos and kept us updated. Thanks for taking such good care of Rue

Kai had the best time with Alex. He got plenty of exercise, adventure, and love while we were away.

Safety, trust & environment

For doggy daycare and boarding, I have comfy crates in multiple sizes, and for your pup's safety, I typically crate them if I leave the house, even if just going to the store. I have a partially-fenced backyard which is perfect for potty breaks, fetch, and short training sessions. I live close to Washington Park, and frequently take pups on the loop around the lake. I also enjoy taking day trips to the Adirondacks and Catskills for hiking :)

Information Alex P. would like to know about your pet

I live on the second floor, so let me know if mobility would be an issue for your (senior) dog. Please give me a heads up about any allergies your pet may have (ex. peanut butter or other common dog treats), as well as medications, feeding/potty routines, and if your pet needs to be crated while left alone.

A typical day

I am a very active person myself, and I love taking dogs on long walks or runs! When I host dogs, we typically wake up between 6-7, and depending on the activity level, go for a stroll or up to a 45 min walk before breakfast. For meals, I use a slow feeding bowl and also have puzzle toys and an assortment of Kongs that I like to freeze for entertainment. With puppies under 6 months, I like to do short training sessions to reinforce basic commands: sit, stay, down, shake, heel. On the weekends, I typically take the dogs hiking with me, or if it's raining, we'll go on a car ride or to the pet store for some socialization.

Availability

I am a PhD student, and I work from home a good portion of the week. When I do have class, it is typically for 4 hours at the most, so I am able to check in on dogs frequently. I am also a very active person, and enjoy strolls through the park, long hikes, or easy tempo runs on local cross-country trails.
