I live in a 3rd floor apartment in a building where the door leads directly to the outside. In my apartment, there is plenty of open space and a cozy bed and futon in my master bedroom for the dogs to chill. Outside, my complex provides an amazing dog park and tons of land, trails, grass, water and pathways to explore. I have a cat but he pretty much stays to himself. Just one other roommate with no pets!
