A pouch might swing side to side on round cats, average kitties, and even slim ones. All cats are born with a primordial pouch, but it may not fully develop or become noticeable until they are adults. You cannot remove a primordial pouch or make it go away as it is part of your cat’s anatomy.

So, what is the purpose of a primordial pouch? Experts say this mysterious feature may play a role in your cat’s survival.

• La génétique. Tous les chats ont une poche primordiale, mais la Dre Shapard affirme que le pli serait plus prononcé chez certaines races.
• Le poids. La poche primordiale est relativement visible chez les chats plus corpulents, mais étant plus lâche que la graisse, elle tombera plus bas et se balancera davantage. Elle pourrait même présenter des dépôts adipeux chez les individus en surpoids.
• L’âge. En vieillissant, vous remarquerez probablement que la poche primordiale de votre chat s’affaisse, et c’est normal. « Tout comme chez nous, la peau perd de son élasticité à mesure que le chat vieillit, ce qui rend la poche primordiale plus proéminente », précise la Dre Shapard.
• L’énergie. Une autre théorie expliquant la raison d’être de la poche primordiale chez le chat est qu’elle ferait office de stockage d’énergie. Ainsi, si un chat venait à manquer un repas, il pourrait puiser l’énergie dont il a besoin dans cette poche ballante. Cette théorie ne convainc pas la Dre Shapard vu la sensibilité du chat dès qu’il manque un ou deux repas.

And numbers on the scale don’t always tell the full story behind your cat’s ideal weight and body condition.

The best method of distinguishing between the primordial pouch and fat is an evaluation method that lets you visually assess your cat’s shape.

"There is a useful tool called the Body Condition Score, which can help you assess whether a cat is overweight or not," Dr. Shapard explains. A healthy cat should have an hourglass shape from above and a tummy tuck with a thin, fat pad toward the front of the belly.

When you feel your cat from the sides, you should be able to feel the ribs under a thin, firm layer of fat. If you can’t feel your cat’s ribs, they may be overweight. Remember, fat will be tight to the body, whereas a primordial pouch will sag and swag.

If you’re unsure if your cat is overweight, ask your vet to demonstrate the Body Condition Score evaluation at your cat’s next exam. If your cat is overweight, your vet will work with you to create a diet plan and an exercise routine.

A pronounced primordial pouch is not known to be linked to cardiovascular disease or diabetes, two common diseases associated with feline obesity.

Don’t bother asking yourself, how do I get rid of my cat’s primordial pouch? If your cat is overweight, shedding a few ounces or pounds might lift the primordial pouch as a cat reaches a healthy weight, but losing this weight will not make it disappear.

It’s good practice to regularly check your cat for any unusual changes like lumps or bumps. Dr. Shapard says a vet should look at a cat’s primordial pouch lump to be sure, but abnormal lumps or bumps could signal a few conditions:

"If you notice a lump in the primordial pouch, I recommend scheduling an appointment with your veterinarian to have the lump checked," Dr. Shapard says. "You do not want to take a wait-and-see approach with a lump because if this is cancerous, early diagnosis and treatment can significantly impact their prognosis."

If the only concern you have about your cat’s primordial pouch is that it sags and sways side to side, Dr. Shapard says that’s okay and would recommend more kitty cuddles and belly rubs—if your feline is up for it.
