When we’re feeling stressed or anxious, there’s nothing like being wrapped up in a thick, heavy blanket. But turning into a cozy burrito isn’t just beneficial for humans. There’s growing evidence that deep pressure—whether from a pressure wrap or a weighted blanket—is just as beneficial in calming dogs’ nerves as our own.
Because of this, weighted blankets for dogs are on the rise as an anti-anxiety tool, and there’s science to back it up. Weighted blankets aren’t for all pups, though, and there are some important safety considerations to keep in mind as you choose. Just starting your search? Best for Medium and Large Dogs: Archstone Pets Weighted Dog Blanket
Weighing in at three pounds, this blanket is still too heavy for the smallest of our canine friends, but it’s a good option for medium-sized dogs weighing 30 pounds and up. It’s also well-sized for use inside a crate or on the go. Unfortunately, you’ll have to spot-clean this one, as it’s not machine-washable. However, it’s made of non-toxic materials, filled with PVC pellets, and covered in a soft plush.
Highlights:
- Most suitable for medium-sized dogs weighing 30 pounds and up
- Available in one size: 24″ x 32″
- Filled with non-toxic PVC pellets
- Spot-clean only

Best Bead-Free Weighted Blanket: Bearaby Cotton Napper
Get the weight without all the plastic and glass with Bearaby’s hug of a handmade blanket. It’s crafted from layers and layers of organic cotton woven together in a chunky knit. The lowest weight is ten pounds, so you’ll want to reserve this blanket for the biggest pups in your life—or make sure that you’re taking the brunt of the weight during your snuggle time. For a slightly lighter alternative, try the Nuzzie 8-Pound Knit Weighted Blanket instead.
Highlights:
- Suitable for large dogs only, with weights starting at 10 pounds
- Free of glass, plastic beads, and other potentially dangerous fill elements
- Made of 100% organic cotton
- Comes in a variety of colors to suit your style
- Machine-washable for easy care
Best for Warm Weather: SLEEP ZONE Cooling Weighted Blanket
In hot temperatures, you and your pup may want the comfort of a weighted blanket but not the warmth. This blanket is double-sided with cotton on one side and naturally cooling bamboo on the other. Plus, it comes with a removable minky cover for when you want extra coziness. Made for humans, the adult sizes range up to 20 pounds—perfect if you have a massive breed at home. The kid-sized versions are much lighter, suiting the majority of pups. Plus, they come in fun, kid-friendly patterns and are machine-washable too.
Highlights:
- Available in sizes suitable for most dogs: 5 pounds and 7 pounds
- Dimensions: 36″ x 48″ (5 pounds); 41″ x 60″ (7 pounds)
- Machine-washable for easy cleanup
Best for Cold Weather: Degrees of Comfort Sherpa Weighted Blanket
Thick winter blankets often have a substantial heft all on their own, but if you’re looking for even more weight, this extra-plush weighted blanket might do the trick. As a note, while we did look into electric weighted blankets for cold days, there were too many safety caveats to recommend them. Electric blankets made for people are often too warm for dogs, and the weights started around a heavy 12 pounds—too much for all but the largest breeds. This soft sherpa blanket promises warmth and weight without the potentially harmful compromises.
Highlights:
- Spot-clean recommended
- Suitable for medium to extra-large dogs with various weight options: 5 pounds, 7 pounds, 10 pounds (and up)
- Dimensions: 36″ x 48″ (5 pounds); 41″ x 60″ (7 pounds); 50″ x 60″ (10 pounds)
- Filled with glass beads
Best Basic Blanket: Fabula Life Weighted Blanket
Available in several sizes with various weights and dimensions, this weighted blanket is simple, affordable, and versatile—but not lacking in coziness. The outer cover is made with a breathable 100% cotton shell and is reinforced with polyester under layers for durability. Inside are hypoallergenic, non-toxic glass beads for all-over weight.
Highlights:
- Suitable for dogs 50 pounds and up, with weights ranging from 5 pounds to 15 pounds
- Dimensions: 36″ x 48″ (5 pounds); 41″ x 60″ (7 pounds); 41″ x 60″ (10 pounds); 48″ x 72″ (12 pounds); 48″ x 72″ (15-pounds)
- Filled with non-toxic, hypoallergenic glass beads
- Machine-washable for easy care
How To Pick a Dog-Safe Weighted Blanket
There are some important things to consider when it comes to choosing a weighted blanket for your dog.
First, there are some pups for whom weighted blankets aren’t a good idea. That includes:
- Dogs with breathing issues or flat faces (brachycephalic breeds), who may find weighted blankets constricting
- Chewers (including puppies), since weighted blankets are often stuffed with unsafe materials like plastic or glass beads and pellets
- Dogs with mobility issues, who may have trouble getting out from underneath a weighted blanket if it becomes uncomfortable
If you’re not sure, it’s a good idea to check with your vet, who can help you figure out if a weighted blanket is a good choice for your pup.
For the dogs who can safely use a weighted blanket, there are a few tricks to finding the optimal cozy comforter.
- Choose a blanket that weighs no more than 10% of your dog’s body weight
- Select a size that will keep your pup from getting tangled up in the material (try a kid’s blanket)
- Supervise snuggle sessions to make sure your dog is comfortable and benefiting from their cover
- Select a blanket made from non-toxic materials (just in case any chewing does happen)
