Why Season Two of ‘Stranger Things’ Should Be All About the Dog

For Dog People

The ’80s film-inspired sci-fi hit Stranger Things is the talk of the summer. We couldn’t help but binge-watch every episode. It made us laugh, it made us cry, and it left us with a LOT of loose ends. A second season must be on the way. Of all the questions left unresolved by the first season finale, there’s one we really want to know. What happened to the Byers’ dog?

Spoilers ahead, if you haven’t watched Stranger Things on Netflix yet!

It took a lot of faith in the Duffer Brothers not to kill the dog, but they earned our trust—and thankfully, the dog goes unharmed. There must be a reason for it, right? There’s still so much we don’t know about this dog, which is one the more adorable things on a pretty creepy show. For example:

1. What is the dog’s name?

It’s understandable. Will Byers was too busy being chased by a monster to greet his dog by name in the first episode of Stranger Things. But this created almost too much mystery for one series. Has the way we’ve treated dogs changed so much since the ’80s?

2. What kind of dog is it?

It looks like maybe an otterhound? An otterhound or otterhound mix played Sandy in the original Annie movie.

3. What does the dog know?

The dog knows something. They always do. In the first episode Hopper wonders, “what’s up with this guy?” and Joyce says, “he’s probably just hungry.” But she’s wrong…probably.

He’s NOT just hungry.

4. Does the dog have powers?

The Byers’ dog, like all dogs, is sensitive to the world beyond and the paranormal. He sees the lights before Joyce in Episode 3. Is it more than just sensitivity? Should season two be about the dog moving things with his mind? Yes. The answer is yes.

5. Oh look, another dog.

What he doin?

6. Why did the monster leave the dog alone?

He’s hanging out in the fort, where Will was. The monster was all about that deer in the woods. Is it just to leave room for the sequel, which will star the dog?

7. Does every kid have this lion/dog toy and what does it mean?

More questions to be resolved in season two.

7. Is there more than one monster and does the dog know that already?

Probably, to both. I mean, was that an egg that Hopper and Joyce saw in the Upside Down or what?

What questions do you have about the dog in Stranger Things? What would you name him?
