In a new Rover survey* of 1,000 U.S. pet parents, original data showcases that pets are integral family members and their well-being is a nonnegotiable part of summer plans. Rover’s data also unveils the top seasonal stressors and how pet parents plan to keep their pets safe from heat, fireworks, and other summer risks.
- Pets as a deciding factor: 88% of pet parents choose summer activities based on whether or not their pet can participate, even if it limits their own enjoyment. Nearly a third (29%) say their pet’s ability to join is always a deciding factor when planning summer outings.
- The top summer safety concerns identified by Rover’s survey are preventing exposure to ticks, fleas and other parasites (38%) and keeping pets cool (32%) in warmer weather.
- Fireworks are a major stressor for two-thirds (65%) of pets, according to Rover’s survey. As a result, 78% of pet parents have skipped a fireworks show to stay home with their pet, and 57% would ban fireworks entirely to spare them from anxiety. See Rover’s tips for managing firework anxiety here.
- Summer heat injuries are common: Half (50%) of pet parents in the Rover survey have had a pet experience heat exhaustion or dehydration, and 24% have required an emergency vet visit due to summer activities. Notably, 64% still admit to not knowing the exact signs of seasonal injuries or ailments. Consult Rover’s Summer Safety Guide for guidance.
- 96% of pet parents prioritize safety, going to great lengths to keep their pets comfortable. According to Rover’s survey top safety practices include keeping indoor temperatures cool (73%), not leaving pets in unattended vehicles (58%), and limiting outdoor time to shaded areas (57%). Almost half (45%) bring portable water bowls when out, nearly a quarter (23%) use booties or wax for paw protection, and one in five (19%) use special grooming to prevent sunburn/overheating.
- Personal sacrifices for pet safety: 79% of pet parents are willing to sacrifice personal comforts in order to prioritize their pet. In terms of spending, 37% would purchase a new air conditioner specifically for their pet, 35% would spend $200+ on heat gear (e.g., cooling vest), and 31% would cancel an expensive vacation.
- Pets are a nonnegotiable part of the summer budget: Half (50%) of pet parents would not cut back on comfort-related expenses. Furthermore, 64% are willing to spend up to $100 more than they currently do on monthly utilities (e.g., running AC) to protect their pets from heat.
