Tag, You’re it. Rover Urges Pet Parents to Update Pet ID Tags and Microchips this Summer

As more pets tend to go missing around the Fourth of July, new research from Rover confirms the importance of updating pet ID information

Pet experts at Rover urge pet parents to ensure pet ID tags and microchips are up to date with accurate identity and contact information as a precaution

Seattle, WA (June 10, 2024) – Rover.com, the world’s largest online marketplace for loving pet care, aims to help keep pets safe this summer with a request for pet parents–update your pet ID tags and microchips.

The majority (60%) of pet parents agree that accurate identifiable information is extremely important for their pet’s safety, according to a recent Rover survey of 1,000 pet parents. Despite this, nearly a third (30%) of pet parents admit it’s been six months or more since they last checked the accuracy and legibility of their pet’s ID tag or microchip–leaving more than half of household pets vulnerable to becoming lost.

“While the request is a simple one, we believe that updating your pet’s ID tag makes a big difference in the event of an escape or separation,” said Matt Williams, Sr. Director of Trust and Safety at Rover. “Between outdoor barbecues, firework stress, and people coming and going–this is the time of year our beloved pets get outside the most. The efficient step of making sure your pet has accurate contact and identity information can make all the difference in being reunited with a lost pet should they get away.”

According to the Humane Society of the United States, animal shelters tend to see an influx of lost pets around the Fourth of July. This is confirmed by pet parents who say that fireworks commonly trigger fear and anxiety for their dogs and cats. According to Rover’s survey:

  • The majority of dogs (74%) and cats (73%) are afraid of fireworks.
  • 42% of pet parents say their dog has tried to run away during fireworks in the past, and of them, 34% say their pet’s escape attempt was successful.
  • 64% of pet parents say their cat has tried to run away during fireworks in the past, with a 31% success rate.

Rover urges pet parents to prepare for a safer summer by double checking pet ID tags and microchips for accurate information, and updating if necessary. As an added incentive, Rover will cover the cost of a new pet ID tag with $35 off of any Rover service. Use the code TAGURIT35 to redeem. Terms and conditions apply.
