Beagle Name Trends
Names related to the lovely (and varied) coloring of the beagle seem to be on the rise—and folks have become quite creative with their monikers. Copper even makes it into the top 15 most popular beagle names, with Honey, Jasper, and Rusty coming in hot, as well.
There also seem to be a plethora of names related to the Beagle’s tasty personality (or food motivation?), with Peanut, Cookie, Chip, and Biscuit ranking high. Bagel is a particularly popular name for this breed, in fact. Get it…beagle/bagel?
In addition, the data shows that beagle parents are pretty much in line with the overall dog-naming trend of embracing those righteous retro names like Rosie, Lucy, Oscar, and Gus. And not surprisingly, Snoopy is much more popular for beagles than for other breeds, thanks to Charlie Brown’s famous pet beagle.
Beagle Name Advice
If you’re having trouble deciding, keep in mind that great beagle names can come from many different sources of inspiration, such as your favorite songs, books, vacation destinations, your heritage, or even dog breed history. For example, your puppy might sport a caffeine-inspired name like Mocha or a nature-themed moniker like Maple.
Another consideration when choosing your beagle name? Dog training. This is of particular importance for puppies. When you’re teaching your new dog to respond to commands like sit, stay, or come, you’ll want to be sure their name isn’t a source of confusion. In other words, avoid puppy names that sound like a common dog training cue, such as “Bit,” which could easily be misheard as “sit.”
Of course, what matters most is that the dog name you choose rolls off your tongue. The best beagle names will make you happy. We’re fans of the “backdoor test” for dog name selection. It’s pretty much what it sounds like: stand at the back door and call out your new dog‘s potential name. Saying “Baxter, it’s time for dinner!” or “Ivy, leave it!” helps take the name out of your imagination and into reality.
