The Knox County Humane Society in Galesburg, IL is a viral sensation, thanks to a call to the community for gently used chairs. The popular post, featuring a video of dogs enjoying chairs already donated by a local mechanic, was shared a half million times in just two days.
Viral Video of Shelter Dogs in Comfy Chairs
The video and story quickly spread to local and national news stations, and chairs began pouring in from as far away as Tennessee.
Shelter Director Erin Buckmaster told The Dodo, “I think having a chair in the kennel really helps give the dogs more of a home setting while they’re here. It’s especially helped one of our dogs, Mickey, with his stress levels. He’s been here about a year— the longest out of everyone. It’s given him a lot more security.”
Buckmaster hopes more shelters while try out adding well-used furniture to their arsenal of tools to make dogs feel comfortable between homes. Not only do the comfy charges help dogs, donating them gives them a second life, prolonging their use before filling up the landfill.
