Three months after Miley Cyrus suffered the devastating loss of her beloved dog, Floyd, she’s opened her heart and home to an adorable new sidekick. This weekend, the pop star, 21, introduced fans to a collie puppy that she’s christened with an unusual name.
“I welcomed Emu Coyne Cyrus into the family a couple days ago,” she wrote Saturday on Instagram. “It’s taken some time to be ready for this next step and loving again.”
Miley has very publicly mourned Floyd, an Alaskan Klee Kai who was reportedly killed by a coyote in early April while she was on her Bangerz tour. As part of the healing process, she sang onstage to a 60-foot inflatable replica of the pooch.
Not long after Floyd’s passing, Cyrus’ mother, Tish, surprised her with a teeny puppy named Moonie. But just a few days later, the chart-topper found him a new home with a family friend, explaining that it was simply too soon for her to love another dog.
“There will never be anyone like Floyd,” Miley now says. “There was a bond that was so deep it’s irreplaceable, but that’s not what I am trying to do. Never will I replace Floyd and that’s something I had to take time to understand.”
To drive that point home, she spent part of the weekend creating a necklace decorated with her late companion’s name.
She also shared a shrine erected in his memory: “The energy around the altar is so powerfully full of love. Love is everywhere and that means so is Floyd.”
According to Miley, she held a “very special memorial service for Floyd,” adding that she felt “my angel Floydy give Emu his blessing.”
“I prayed to Floyd to just give [Emu] a touch of his awesomeness and he has,” reveals Miley.
“He is so special and different than my baby Floyd and I think Floyd did that on purpose. But sometimes he does little things that remind me of him and it makes me smile. I’m blissed out right now. I feel like this is a new beginning in so many ways.”
And a squeaky-clean one! In addition to the bath-time photo above, Miley posted a (bathing-suit clad) shower pic with little Emu.
Seems all the scrubbing was necessary. In another post, under a photo of a muddy Emu, Miley encourages everyone to “let your pups play and get dirty. Giving them a bath is so cute.”
Emu joins Cyrus’ other rescue dogs: Bean, Mary Jane and Happy. Happily, the canine quartet already appears to have bonded.
On Monday morning, Miley shared the view from her pillow: “So it begins #iwokeuplikedis.”
