History of the Havanese
The national dog of Cuba, the Havanese is related to other popular Bichon type dogs like the Coton de Tulear, Bichon Frise, and Maltese. The Havanese traveled to Cuba from Spain in the 1600s. Some Havanese enthusiasts are working to create a ‘classic’ version of the Havanese, breeding for traits seen in old paintings and sculptures of the breed. This new breed is not yet recognized by the AKC.
Havanese Care and Grooming
The wavy, silky double coat of the Havanese requires frequent combing and regular grooming. The soft texture of the hair is like a magnet for debris, so if you plan on having a lot of outdoor adventures, you may want to consider a short puppy cut for your Havanese.
Havanese Personality
Small but never yappy, trainable but not requiring endless exercise or supervision, these sweet, small dogs have made their living as companions for centuries. The Havanese is definitely a ‘Velcro dog’ and does best when not left alone for long periods of time.
