With no shortage of memes taking over the internet pretty much all. the. time, we figured we were kind of overdue for a roundup our forever favorites for a good ol’ laugh. Be sure to share your fave dog memes in the comments below!
In 2011, a genius human posted this meme on Tumblr, and because it’s amazing, it then found a nice little home on Reddit and blew up immediately. The photo of the black labrador on the phone is a still from a 1984 Serbian film called Pejzaži u magi, for which we are eternally grateful and definitely didn’t know existed before now.
Nothing will turn a bad day around faster than a “Who’s awesome?” meme, especially considering the fact that this meme uses the wrong form of “you’re,” which, frankly, makes it all the better. This meme dates all the way back to 2004, when a photo of Don Johnson winking and pointing at the camera took flight with the caption “Sos gross, sabelo!” which translates to “You’re awesome! Know it!” And when “You’re awesome! Know it!” comes from a dog, everything is OK in the world.
Twitter user @singalittleflat put this bad boy on the interwebs with the caption “IT IS A PUGKIN SPICE LATTE” in 2013 and, well, the internet had a collective freakout and turned that thing into a meme in no time. We’ll take one, please! Hold the whip.
OK, so there’s technically zero text involved with this meme, but that doesn’t even matter because once one dog was photographed wearing pantyhose on the internet, it was all over. These guys got their 15 minutes of fame (and then some!) in 2013, when their owner posted this image to the Chinese social network Weibo. And the rest was moderately inappropriate history.
Doge is maybe thee most famous dog meme of all time. It took off in 2013, when a pic of Kabosu the Shiba Inu looking a little unsure about life was posted on the internet and the masses got ahold of it, adding “doge” sayings in Comic Sans. Doge sayings generally follow a two-word pattern that features a modifier and a word that can’t be modified. Basically, it’s rough English with a “wow,” “amaze,” or “excite” stuck in there, too. You know, for good measure.
Ermahgerd is a retainer-wearing translation of “Oh my God,” which was born from a photo of a girl with a handful of books from the kid-friendly horror chapter books, Goosebumps. The meme went viral in 2012, and just about everything got the “ermahgerd” treatment — including this pup, who’s super stoked about “wurter sprehrnklurs.”
Birthday Dog was born from Riley, a bichon frise-poodle mix who posed for an extra special (and extra human-looking!) birthday photo at his human’s table in 2010. Riley’s facial expression is eerily similar to the facial expressions commonly associated with, well, people under the influence of marijuana, which made the photo meme gold without having to do anything.
When “Business Cat” took off, it was only a matter of time before “Business Dog” followed suit (puns!). The meme took off in 2011, and as long as there’s something a boss would say followed by something a dog would say, it pretty much is guaranteed to bring the LOLs.
Dogs doing human things is an easy sell, so when dogs doing human things started cropping up on the internet, we weren’t really all that surprised that the photos made for perfect memes. Case in point? “I have no idea what I’m doing,” which features pics of dogs doing…human things. Like this photo of a dog taking photos at a wedding, which dates back to 2010.
We don’t blame Cupcake Dog for being 100 percent mesmerized by a plate of cupcakes because we’d totally be mesmerized by a plate of cupcakes, too. This guy, whose name is Staines, got his first taste of stardom in 2009, when he was featured on an episode of Animal Planet’s dog training show “It’s Me or the Dog.” In this case, though, it’s “It’s Cupcakes or I’m Out.”
