We admit it: there’s something about a dog with perky, pointy ears that just melts us. Back in the day (way back in the day), the ancestors of current canines used their pricked ears when hunting and for protecting themselves against danger. Though modern dog breeds with pointy ears don’t need them for survival anymore, we can’t help but adore the way they look.
Here are some of our favorite dogs rockin’ the upright look. We’re sure you’ll find them hard to resist as well.

3. Australian cattle dog
4. German shepherd
5. Pembroke Welsh corgi
6. Chihuahua
7. Samoyed

West Highland White Terrier
This little herding dog with the pointy white ears makes an excellent companion. Their sense of loyalty, humor and friendliness is unmatched, and their intelligence makes them ideal for obedience classes. Plus, it’s good for them to burn that excessive energy somehow, so train away!
Siberian Husky
Siberian huskies are incredibly affectionate and great with children—especially active ones that’ll help them get plenty of exercise. Their independent streak can make them a bit of a challenge for novice or first-time dog owners, so you’ll have to stay on top of things if you invite this pup into your family.
Australian Cattle Dog
Heelers come to mind right away when you’re thinking about a dog breed with pointy ears. Looking for a pro to play frisbee and fetch with? This intelligent breed is game. These canines love having a job to do (even if it’s just catching a flying disc), and they’re protective and loyal to their family unit. Just make sure to give them plenty of exercise or you’ll have a bored, mischievous pup on your hands.
German Shepherd
The noble German shepherd is a popular pet for a reason (ranked #2 by the AKC!)—and it’s not just because of those adorable pointy ears. Smart, kid-friendly and endlessly loyal, this dog is the perfect family dog and loves being included in activities.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi
These affectionate dogs make wonderful additions to any home. Super-smart and easy to train, these Corgis are adorable and agreeable, but don’t underestimate that stubborn streak!
Chihuahua
Here’s another dog breed with pointy ears that practically defines the big-eared look. Bursting with personality, these little guys are perfect for those living in small spaces. Affectionate with familiar people and with children, these pups are playful, sassy—and portable.
Samoyed
One of the world’s oldest dog breeds, this calm canine from snowy climates is super-fluffy and usually sporting a sweet smile. Just make sure to spend time taking care of their luscious coat (it can be quite a task!), and be prepared to incorporate them fully into the family. This isn’t the type of dog to leave at home for long periods of time.
Portuguese Podengo
Here’s a pointy-eared dog you may not have heard of. Playful and lively, the Portuguese podengo is quickly establishing itself as wonderful breed for families. Filled with energy, they love to race around the house (hide the breakables!), and are kind and patient with children. Give them the exercise and mental stimulation they require and you’re sure to have a loyal family member for life.
Swedish Vallhund
Herding dogs to the core, these sturdy fellas are filled with energy, but they also make time to cuddle. Though known to be friendly and sociable, they make excellent watch dogs when they perceive threats or danger to their beloved family members. Some have suggested they look like a “wolf-corgi” (which isn’t a thing, of course, but we see it).
