Which Dogs Belong to Which Hogwarts House?

For Dog People

Get ready for the most controversial article ever published, as we sort dog breeds into the four Hogwarts houses. (Dogwarts? Sorry. I’m really sorry about that.) In reality, most dogs are Hufflepuffs and most cats are Slytherins, right? But let’s use our imaginations and get out the Sorting Collar.

Gryffindor Dog Breeds

Gryffindor values bravery, daring, nerve, and chivalry. Its mascot is the lion and its unofficial mascot is Harry Potter, The Boy Who Lived, The Only Gryffindor Who Mattered.

These dogs look like lions, or like they are wearing a cool wig. The Tibetan Mastiff is also known for being courageous and strong-willed. Sounds and looks like a Gryffindor!

German Shepherd

German Shepherd

German shepherds are one of the most popular and recognizable dog breeds, so in many ways they are the Harry Potter of dogs. They are confident, fearless, and natural protectors. With the proper training, they can be great family dogs.

Komondor

This dog breed is Hagrid. Hagrid was sorted into Gryffindor. Gryffindor sounds like Komondor. And around and around we go. But seriously, like Hagrid, Komondors are gentle guardians with unruly fur. They live to have something to care for and watch after.

Hufflepuff Dog Breeds

It could be said that all dogs go to Hufflepuff, as it is a house that values fair play, loyalty, hard work, and dedication. Their mascot is the badger.

Great Pyrenees

Look at this dog. It’s quite possibly made of marshmallows. The Great Pyrenees is known for being gentle, loving, and one of the most loyal breeds around. Plus, this breed belongs to the Working group. If Cedric Digory was a dog, would he be a Great Pyrenees?

Beagle

Known for being kind, gentle, and persistent, plus extra-curious, the Beagle would do well in Hufflepuff.

Labrador Retriever

Of course Labs (and other retrievers) are Puffs! They’re friendly, outgoing, and play well with others. These big softies are the sweetest of the bunch.

Ravenclaw Dog Breeds

Ravenclaw is a house that values intelligence, wit, and learning. Its symbol is the eagle. If you’ve ever worried that your dog is smarter than you, or if your dog has figured out what word you’re spelling, you might have a Ravenclaw on your hands.

Border Collie

Border collies have extraordinary instinct and intelligence. They accept training, but can become restless without enough mental stimulation. They’re also known for their tireless work ethic. 10 points to Ravenclaw!

Poodle

Poodles are also very smart, and proud of it! There’s a reason they’re the eighth most popular breed in the US. Ravenclaws pride themselves on being original, and poodles have so many styling options, it’s easy to imagine them in this house.

Jack Russell Terrier

The Jack Russell terrier is a lively, inquisitive breed, and many famous dogs are terriers for their ability to learn tricks. Wishbone, one of these famous Jack Russells, is a shoo-in for Ravenclaw.

Slytherin Dog Breeds

A disclaimer: #NotAllSlytherins are evil. This house is known for being cunning, resourceful, and ambitious. The Slytherin symbol is a snake, and it’s a house known for its pure-bloods.

Chihuahua

The sassy chihuahua is known for its grace, snootiness, and a couple truly chilling episodes of The Dog Whisperer. Chihuahuas are said to be very selective, which makes them a fine fit for Slytherin.

English Bulldog

The English Bulldog is expensive, purebred, and can be quite stubborn. Mostly, though, this breed looks like Crabbe and/or Goyle.

Pharaoh Hound

Also an expensive breed, the Pharaoh Hound just looks like it wants to open up the Chamber of Secrets. They’re known for being smart and noble, and for looking like they’re plotting your demise in Potions.

Cats

As I said, goes without saying.

So, which Hogwarts house would you sort your dog into?
