When cantaloupe (or honeydew) is on sale and in season, why not share the bounty of summer of with your dog?

This recipe is so simple, your dog could do it herself (if she had thumbs, that is). And this recipe is delicious for people too!

Dehydrated Cantaloupe Chews for Dogs

Cantaloupe for dogs is a tasty, healthy treat, and this recipe for homemade dried cantaloupe makes it even easier to store. Plus, it’s a healthy treat for the humans, too.

  • Author: Kiki Kane
  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 8 hours
  • Total Time: 8 hours 10 minutes
  • Yield: 5 Trays 1x
  • Category: Healthy Chews
Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 Ripe Cantaloupe or Honeydew Melon

Equipment

  • Food Dehydrator (we used the Nesco Snackmaster from Amazon)
  • Optional: Mandoline for perfect slices (We used a Benriner mandoline from Amazon)

Instructions

Scrub melon thoroughly before cutting.

Cut melon in half and remove seeds.

Cut each half into thirds (or whatever width will fit nicely in your mandoline).

Peel the melon and then slice carefully, making each piece between 1/8 and 1/4″ thick.

Place melon slices onto dehydrator trays, taking care to leave space between each piece for circulation.

Fire up the dehydrator at a gentle 130º. Check the cantaloupe after 4 hours (ours took 8 hours to dry thoroughly.)

Allow melon to cool completely, then store in an airtight container.
