In small doses it can be safe for dogs, but it has several other unwanted side-effects: 1) It can darken your dog’s stool significantly, so if there’s a deeper underlying reason for your dog’s stomach pain, you may not be able to detect blood in your dog’s stool, which can be a useful diagnostic tool. 2) Pepto Bismol tablets can obscure the view in X-rays, which are also useful in diagnosing a dog with more serious stomach problems. 3) Over time, Pepto Bismol can lead to the development of ulcers.
Alternatives
If your dog has an upset stomach, it may be short-lived and shouldn’t require medication or medical attention. He must just need to ride it out. You can feed your dog a little cottage cheese or white rice and chicken broth to keep him nourished when he’s not feeling well. But if you noticed prolonged upset, definitely consult your vet.
