Apple pie is a staple in many households, and there’s nothing quite like biting into a warm slice with some vanilla ice cream on the side. There’s also nothing quite like coming back to a plate on the floor and your dog licking their chops as they finish off your dessert.
So, can dogs eat apple pie? Read on to find out.
Can dogs eat apple pie?
Honestly, it depends on ingredients and your dog. If the apple pie is a typical recipe containing sugar, cinnamon, and apples, your dog should survive without any problems. All of the typical ingredients in apple pie are safe for dogs in the amounts used in most recipes.
In fact, apples themselves can be a healthy treat to share with your pet. But we won’t encourage you to give apple pie to your dog. While the apple does offer nutritional benefits, apple pie is basically apple drowning in sugar and encased in a fatty crust which your dog doesn’t need.
Watch out for nutmeg
One ingredient that sometimes is in apple pie recipes that could cause issues is nutmeg. Nutmeg contains a toxin called myristicin, which can cause issues if ingested. Thankfully, the amount used in baked goods such as apple pie is low enough that the most likely reaction is mild stomach upset. Watch out for the following symptoms if your dog has eaten apple pie or any baked good that contains nutmeg, however:
- Increased heart rate
- Dry mouth
If your dog exhibits any of these symptoms or has continued vomiting or diarrhea after eating some of your pie, it’s time to visit the vet ASAP.
Apples are fine, even beneficial
Apples themselves can be a tasty treat for your dog, containing healthy fiber and vitamins. You can share plain apple slices, cut into chunks, with your dog, or can even dress them up with a bit of dog-friendly peanut butter. (Watch out for xylitol.)
