Walking multiple dogs at the same time can be a trip—literally. If you try to wrangle three separate leashes, the odds are good that you’ll end up in a tangled mess. Thankfully, there’s a walking aid for that: a three-dog leash.
We spoke with Dr. Kathryn Rosalie Dench, a Veterinary Surgeon and adviser and writer at Gentle Dog Trainers, to learn more about triple-dog leashes and how to choose, then rounded up some of our favorite top-rated triple-leashes on the market.
Best for Comfort: 360° Swivel No-Tangle Three-Dog Leash
This soft-handled three dog leash is made from mountain-climbing rope for extra strength and durability. Each of the three connectors has 360-degree swivel capabilities, allowing your dogs to move around without getting tangled. Tangle-free features are a top quality Dr. Dench looks for in any triple-dog leash. “When considering a three-dog leash, look for a quality product that’s strong and durable, with a tangle-resistant design,” she recommends.
This leash can also be used as a double-dog leash, with each of the three extenders featuring a clip-on poop bag dispenser. The thick-padded handle helps to keep human hands comfortable while also helping to absorb tension from pulling. “Padded handles can be a bonus, as they provide extra comfort for you during those longer strolls,” says Dr. Dench.
Key Features:
- Total length: 5.7 feet
- Available in two sizes: small (6-40 pound dogs) and large (20-150 pound dogs)
- Material: braided nylon polyester
Best Adjustable: MoSANY Three-Way Dog Leash
This nylon three-dog leash from MoSANY boasts a padded handle with adjustable leash lengths. Each assisting leash can extend from 21 to 34 inches, which lets you walk dogs of varying sizes on one leash.
Though the adjustable extenders may help with dogs of varying sizes, Dr. Dench offers a note of caution: “When walking dogs of different sizes on a three-dog leash, be extra cautious. The larger dog’s strength could impact the smaller ones significantly. If there’s a considerable size difference, it might be best to opt for individual leashes to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort.”
The leash material is also lightweight, so it’s a nice option for small to medium-sized dogs.
Key Features:
- Both ends of extenders use metal swivel hooks to attach to the leash and dog’s harness or collar
- The length of entire leash is a little over 5 feet
- Two color choices: all black or multi-color
Best Bungee-Style: COCOPET Sturdy Three-Way Nylon Bungee Leash
This three-leash coupler is a great option for walking bigger dogs or heavy pullers due to its inclusion of bungee features on each extender. Made from durable nylon materials with heavy-duty, nickel-plated swivel snaps, this leash coupler allows dogs space to roam with a stretchy bungee design on each extender from 17 to 30 inches.
While the individual leash extensions cannot be adjusted, Dr. Dench notes that having equal-sized leashes is a positive for three-dog leashes: “Opt for leashes of equal length to allow all your dogs to move comfortably during walks.”
Though it’s not 100% tangle-proof, many dog parents note it’s durable, easy to use, and generally makes their walks less chaotic with three canines in tow.
Key Features:
- Made from nylon and bungee cord
- One-size available
- Shock absorbing bungees
Best for Dogs of the Same Size: Heyllou Three-in-One Durable Nylon Dog Leash
Walking three dogs is challenging under most circumstances, but this three-dog leash makes it easier with a padded top handle and nylon rock-climbing material with chromium-coated traction locks. The main leash is 31.5 inches long, and each extender adds 27.6 inches of space for each dog to roam. The 360-degree metal swivel connector helps prevent tangles, though with three dogs, many pet parents note a few pile ups are inevitable.
The length allows for quality bonding time and control, which Dr. Dench remarks is an added benefit of a triple-dog leash. “It allows you to keep all your furry pals close and maintain better control over them, promoting a sense of togetherness during your outdoor adventures.”
Key Features:
- Best for medium to large dogs; recommended weight range 33-132 pounds
- Features rust-free metal components
- Can also be used as a double or single dog leash
Best No-Tangle: Triple-Dog Leash Handle
Technically, this handy item isn’t a leash. But it makes it possible to attach three leashes (technically even four) for tangle-proof walks. It’s made from heavy-duty plastic and can handle a load of up to 300 pounds. It’s versatile too. If a doggo takes a potty break, just loop it over your arm to free up your hand for poop pickup, then simply turn the handle to quickly untangle leashes.
While this triple-dog leash handle has both pet parents and dog walkers raving, Dr. Dench notes it’s important always to stay aware when walking multiple dogs. “Walks with a three-dog leash may look different from walks with dogs on separate leashes,” she says. “You’ll need to be more attentive to your dogs’ movements and behaviors to ensure they walk smoothly as a trio.”
Key Features:
- Available in three colors: Black, grey, and red
- Made in the USA
- Not sold with a leash
Is a Three Dog Leash a Good Fit for My Pups?
According to Dr. Dench, if you have a dog crew that’s similar in size and temperament, they may be a good fit for a triple-dog leash. “Three-dog leashes can be a fantastic fit for households with multiple furry pals who get along well and have similar energy levels,” she said. “If you have a trio of dogs that are already comfortable walking together, a three-dog leash can be a game-changer for your outings.”
But if you have vastly different-sized dogs or a group with different temperaments, it might be better to stick with solo walks. “If your dogs have significant size or strength differences or if they tend to pull in different directions, using separate leashes might be a safer and more manageable option,” recommends Dr. Dench.
And as with anything new, giving your dogs time to get used to the triple-dog leash before heading out on a long expedition is a good idea. “Introduce the three-dog leash in a controlled environment, rewarding good behavior with treats and praise,” advises Dr. Dench. “Gradually increase the length and complexity of your walks as your dogs get accustomed to the setup.”
