Pit bulls aren’t shy, and neither are their owners. We pibble people are vocal about our love for our smart, sensitive, blocky-headed dogs. After all, as pit bull ambassadors, it’s up to us to show the world just how amazing they are!
“Pit bulls” encompass a wide range of dogs, but in general, pitties are medium- to large-sized. They have a stocky, muscular build and a short, smooth coat that comes in lots of colors. Pitties’ most distinguishing feature is their blocky head and wide jaws (giving us that famous pit bull grin).
Here are 10 facts that pit bull lovers know by heart.
1. Heroes have fur (and adorable faces)
Every dog person knows how life-changing, even life-saving, a dog can be. For me, my pit bulls offer me companionship and love I haven’t found anywhere else. When times get tough, they inspire me to keep going.
But you don’t have to take my word for it: just look to the pit bull’s past as a family dog and war hero! These days, pitties make incredible therapy and emotional support dogs.
2. That tail don’t stop
Pitties have long, tapered tails that wag and wag and wag. That whip-like tail can give you a good thwacking if you get in its way, but you won’t mind. After all, nothing beats a pittie butt-wiggle!
3. You better love to snug
Pit bulls are called “velcro dogs” for a reason. These affectionate dogs will cuddle you, and cuddle you hard. Get ready to have your lap sat on by a 60-pound barrel of love.
4. Pit bull poker face is no joke
Pitties are known for their tough looks. It’s true, some pitties have mastered the stare-down. But most of them use it to try and convince you to give them a bite of your steak. Stick around long enough, and you’ll see that pit bull poker face turn into a joyful grin.
5. Love to laugh? You gotta get a pit bull
Pitties must be tied with pugs as the most comical dogs around. Their silly, athletic antics and wide, goofy grins will have you literally LOL’ing.
6. Pittie love > personal belongings
Here’s the deal: pitties can be sensitive. And sensitive dogs are more prone to separation anxiety. As a pit bull person, I’ve learned to roll with the occasional destruction of personal property. So what if sometimes my stuff gets chewed on; I can’t stay mad at that adorable face! Click here to learn how to soothe separation anxiety.
7. #Tongueouttuesday? More like #tongueouteveryday
“Hey, you got a tasty morsel for me?” From peanut butter off a spoon to your face first thing in the morning, pitties aren’t stingy with their licks.
8. A group of three or more pit bulls is called a puddle
Okay, I made that up. But it’s cute, right?! Some pit bulls are picky about other dogs, but others are super-social. If you get a group of dog-friendly pitties together, get ready for an adorable, squishy, sometimes-noisy good time.
9. Patience is a virtue (and pit bulls have plenty)
Despite their high activity levels and go-g0-go personalities, pitties are incredibly patient. They live to serve their people, even if that includes sitting still while you dress them in a silly outfit.
10. Pit bulls teach you to be tough but tender
Us pit bull people develop thick skins to deflect ignorant comments about our dogs. Thankfully, pitties set great examples for how to interact in the world. Be curious, active, and loyal. Focus on the positive, and always be willing to play.
