“Letter of Recommendation for Mayumi R. The following is in response to a request from my daughter, who, there is no doubt, has a great love of animals, and with certainty a particular affinity to family pets. By way of introduction I also add that as a family, we have lived and worked on our farm throughout her childhood years, and now that she has ventured forth on her own, we continue in that enterprise. While it is undeniably true that, when asked to consider her character and talents, I may be a bit inclined in my opinions to favor my daughter, it must also be universally acknowledged that all parents who proudly reflect on their offspring should rightfully be forgiven for expressing their views, which are founded on the necessary ingredient of paternal love. With the view of offering a far less biased assessment of her attitude and attributes toward family pets, I will make my best effort to present this overview from our family dogs’ perspective. Our ‘Mocha’ is an Anatolian Shephard, who Mimi and I found at an up-state New York farm, owned and operated by Turkish immigrants that had smuggled their dogs out of Turkey. This, they had explained to us at length, was illegal due to government regulations that forbade the export of the breed. Their efforts, which proved successful, involved dying their dogs, which are generally very white in coloration, a dramatic black. While ‘Mocha’ might very well be regarded as the offspring of illegal immigrants, and there is no denying that there is a considerable stigmatism associated with such origins today, yet are we very happy that she was able to enter our lives and fill the gap created when our first Anatolian, ‘Sirius’, died of cancer the previous year. There are, of course, many ways in which a dog might communicate their moods and attitudes toward humans, but ours has the disadvantage of having been bred over many generations to not bark towards family members or friends, and therefore not even the most subtle and well-meaning yip is ever offered up to denote happiness. Likewise, her tail, which is distinctly curled to further reflect the peculiar genetic selection identified with the breed, limits the usual motions of most other breeds. So, after carefully scrutinizing her behavior, I have relied greatly on her eyes and body language as the tell-tale (pun intended) signs of what she wishes to express to us emotionally. With each member of our family, ‘Mocha’ has a discernably unique mannerism. With my wife she is respectful, if not somewhat tinged with jealousy when I, on occasion, massage her feet after a hard day of work. ‘Mocha’ will quite frequently place herself between us in an effort to transfer this sign of concern and therapy to herself. Our son, who is maintaining a chiseled muscular torso associated with youthful vigor, has carefully cultivated a reputation, it is rumored, to “turn girls on.” ‘Mocha’ readily acknowledges his male virility, and though she is neutered, will affectionately hump his leg. I, as ‘grand master’ of the household, and ‘lord of the manor’ receive an unmistakable smile and the ready opportunity to offer a ‘belly rub’ so that I might more adequately display my appreciation for her unwavering affection and fidelity to her family. And then there is her association with Mimi (Mayumi), which never ceases to amaze me. With Mimi, she exhibits a rapport that only the warmth of an intimate mutual trust and bonding can elicit. When I walk ‘Mocha’ her tendency is to wander off, or chase a deer, and generally ignore my entreaties to return. I therefore keep her on a leash to avoid the anxious moments that her absence brings about. When Mimi walks her, the leash comes off and, lo and behold, ‘Mocha’ follows as though there is nothing more important than to accompany her ‘buddy’. It is my belief, and that of many other pet lovers, that dogs can ‘sense’ a person’s inner disposition, and by all accounts, Mimi holds a special place in ‘Mocha’s’ life. Without fail, whenever Mimi enters ‘Mochas’ field of view, her face lights up with that very visible fawning expression that signals her quiet expression of happiness. As an individual, Mimi has always displayed a great sense of responsibility and I believe that her judgement is comparable to many far older than her. She is conscientious in her duties, respectful of others, and has many personal insights into the animal kingdom, as we have, at various times, raised cows, sheep and goats on our farm. All that said, I have little more to offer, than to say in good faith that placing your pet in her care, should give you the comfort of knowing that her qualities as a person are very much what any parent would wish to instill in their daughter.
