Our dogs’ names often reflect what matters most to us—from music and grub to footie and entertainment and beyond. And as world events and pop culture shift, so do the dog-naming trends.
To see what pet parents are naming their dogs in 2024, we dug into Rover’s database of over a million pets and uncovered the most popular names and biggest trends.
Summer of Sports
The summer of 2024 featured all kinds of sporting events, and pet parents took note. The top trending dog names inspired by the Olympic games are Eleanor (up 41%), Lauren (also up 41%), Beth (up 32%), Toby (up 8%), and Lola (up 4%). While not an athlete, Snoop Dogg’s appearances at the games bumped up his popularity in dog names by 91%.
The top trending World-Cup-inspired dog names are two of the best England squad performers, Jude (up 32%) and Saka (up 441%), as well as Fifa (up 191%).
Our love of football is also reflected in dogs named after footie legends, including Shearer, which is up 191%, along with Lionel (up 31%), Rooney (up 216%), and Beckham (up 291%).
Dog Names That Delve Into Politics
Brits aren’t afraid to muck in with politics for pet name inspiration, as evidenced by trending dog names Ed (up 216%), Angela (up 41%), David (up 35%), Boris (up 2%), Corbyn (up 191%), and Nigel (up 9%). On the other hand, Rishi is trending down in popularity by -59%, and Liz is down by -29%. Make of this what you will: New PM Keir didn’t make the list at all this year.
Not all political names come from Westminster, however. Dog names inspired by US politicians include Donald (up 49%) and Harris (up 6%).
‘It Girl’ Names for Dogs Are So In
Maybe she’s born with it—or maybe she’s a dog with an It Girl name. These pop-culture icons include Olivia (up 78%), Taylor (up 56%), Florence (up 29%), Rita (up 28%), and Kylie (up 28%). Taylor’s surname Swift is up 71%, and Charli (named after our own Charli xcx) rose a whopping 316% in popularity this year.
Beyonce is new to the It Girl trends list in the UK this year.
Top 5 Popular Dog Breeds & Their Trending Names

Next is the chipper, friendly Labrador Retriever, whose most popular names are: Hallie, Django, Sonny, Cash, and Rodney. The sweet, loving Cockapoo is the third most popular breed, and people love to name them Lacey, Georgie, Yoshi, Zola, and Delilah.
The sociable Cocker Spaniel takes fourth in our most popular breeds list and is often named Bryn, Heidi, Odin, Wilson, and Zeus. Last but not least is the quirky, playful French Bulldog, whose top trending names are Mable, Blaze, Bunny, Bluebell, and Florence.
Dog Names the World Has Never Seen Before
Dog name trends often reflect the cultures they’re born into, and the creativity of dog parents around the globe continues to give us a proper buzz. Here are our favourite new and unique dog names added to our database in 2024, from five countries, in no particular order.
From the USA, we’ve got Al Pugchino, Detective Carl Pancakes, and Ruepaw. Canada came through with Madame Pierogi Von Jellybelly, Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli, and Sweeney. The Brits smashed it with Albus Dumblepaw, Chandler Bing, Velma, and Daphne coming out of the UK. Spain saw these fantastic new names this year: Rioja, Leonor, and Pulguita. And, last but certainly not least, France showed up with dog names Oui-Fi, Voltaire, and Ne Pas Citer.
