Pet care experience

Energetic dog lover w/lg fenced yrd

I am 48 year old wildlife biologist that is currently self-employed and working out of my home. I have been the caregiver for a variety of dogs throughout my life, large to small. There are no dogs living with me now, as my shepard/husky mix, pit/husky mix, and big wonderful lab I lived with over the past 20 years have all passed. I have resisted bringing another dog into my home/heart due to potential need to travel for future seasonal wildlife work, so know that your dog will be extra loved and cared for due to my current dogless state! Near Mt. Tabor, my home is small, but clean and tidy, with a large backyard that has a high, secure fence. I have spent much time walking through inner SE PDX and hiking in the Pacific Northwest with my three (passed on now) dogs leashed, so can easily read potential conflicts, understand cues from dogs in my care, and manage situations that arise well. I also have spent over twelve years volunteering in wildlife rehabilitation, with three of those being employed as a paid staff member running a rehabilitation center. As a result I have handled and cared for a huge variety of native wildlife, so compassionate animal care focused on supporting the best possible well being for your dog (or cat) is natural to me. My work in rehab required me to quickly read and understand the deeper needs of animals in my care. I look forward to spending quality time with your furry companion!

Wendy and Sachi were a great team! Our boys loved staying at their place and they were so thoughtful to ask about things as specific as which time of day they ate, if they were allowed on furniture, etc. We did a meet-up prior to the stay where more great questions were asked. Very communicative, adorable photos. Thanks again!

Simba and Rory had a great time and Wendy sent fun photos throughout their stay. I was confident my little reactive pups were in great hands and will definitely be back for another visit next time we're in town.

Schedule

Oddly, I often have rock and crystal sales in my driveway on good weather days. Dogs that do well here have low separation anxiety type issues that would cause them to bark or whine continuously if I step away from hanging out with them in the backyard (or the air-conditioned inside) for a few moments to speak with a customer. I want your buddy to have a great time here, so will always work to figure out if this will be the right fit. My regulars love my rock sale days because their dog(s) get tons of supervised sunbathing and outside play time with me!

Safety, trust & environment

Your dog is with me at all times during their stay unless I need to run a quick errand or go to an appointment. They are supervised when hanging out in the backyard, which has both shady and sunny areas and is a secure yard with a high fence that I've never had a dog even try hard to escape from, never mind succeed. I like to find out what your routine is, like where your dog usually sleeps in your house for example, and try to mimic that as closely as possible to help improve their comfort level while they are here. My mission is to try and give them a fun vacation while making sure they feel super loved and supported.

A typical day

On my days off from rock sales I like to take your dog on a hike or to the river, even camping sometimes if you think that would be okay. Whatever we have discussed and you are comfortable with I try and make happen during your dog's stay to give them some fun experiences while you are away. I also try to switch up the walking routes in my neighborhood while they are here (or even go to some nearby nature parks for walks) to give them lots of new smells to enjoy.

Definitely let me know if your dog(s) has any special needs or behaviors I need to account for. I have a big place in my heart for senior dogs and dogs that need a little extra love to feel at ease. As long as that doesn't manifest in strong separation anxiety behaviors, dogs with a few special needs are a great fit here!
