I care for a client’s pet as if they were my own. I try to keep to their daily routine as close to normal as possible. I follow oral/written direction really well (I have clients who have written me a few pages worth of care instructions and I will never complain when someone gives me tons of details like that)! I make sound judgement calls when needed (i.e. if I have a question and can’t get in touch with the owner I can make a safe, temporary decision until I hear back, for example if a pet is having a medical emergency vs something minor that can wait—however, the owner would always be notified immediately whether their pet is having an emergency or just a minor occurrence).
Information Valerie P. would like to know about your pet
It's important for me to know of any behavioral or medical conditions your pet may have prior to meeting/providing services. I am unable to accept human-aggressive pets (fear cases are fine). If your pet requires medication, I will need to know if they have/may bite, growl, hiss, or scratch (for these pets, we may need to discuss other possible options for them). I will need to know if you use a shock, prong, or choker collar on your dog before visits begin, as these are tools I do not work with. We will need to discuss disuse while I care for your dog. Harnesses, buckle collars, or martingale collars are preferred. Please inform me of any reptiles (and other small pets) that are in your home whether or not they require care from me. Everything else can be discussed during the REQUIRED meet and greet, such as your pet’s likes/dislikes, vaccination records, emergency contacts, where food, treats, and other supplies are located, etc.
A typical day
Each animal is different, but some of the fun things I’ve done with dogs (w/ owner permission) are going for walks were there are lots of interesting smells, take trips to the pet store for a doggie treat or new toy, go to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts for a Pup Cup, stop at a water ice/ice cream stand, (if friendly/calm) hang out with my dogs, go to dog-friendly parks and/or go for a mini-hike, play in the pool, play fetch in the backyard, play with doggie-puzzles, or play hide-and-seek with treats! For cats, I let them sunbathe by the front door (if they can see outside the door), brush them, play with them, pet them, and sit with them.

Pet care experience
Hi! My name is Valerie, and dogs have been a central part of my life for as long as I can remember. There has never been a time when I didn’t share my home with a pet. Currently, I have two rescued American Pit Bull Terriers, Teddy and Talia. Caring for dogs isn’t just something I do for work—it’s something that has always been part of who I am. I’ve spent over 20 years working professionally with animals in shelters, veterinary medicine, and pet care. My professional journey with dogs began when I was just 13 years old working at a high-intake county animal shelter. There, I learned how to care for shelter dogs, showcase them for adoption, counsel potential adopters, and help them find the right match for their family. Over the years, my experience expanded through several roles in the animal care field. I worked at a dog daycare managing playgroups of 20+ dogs at a time, at a private boarding facility providing individualized care for pets while their families traveled, and with a mobile veterinary clinic where I helped educate pet parents about preventative care while assisting with vaccines, blood draws, and microchipping. Later, I was asked to join a no-kill animal shelter as their Medical Coordinator. In that role, I performed veterinary technician duties, treated sick animals, managed quarantine cases, and ensured the animals remained healthy and up to date on their vaccines and preventatives. Today, I work as a part-time Senior Veterinary Pharmacy Technician at one of the region’s largest independently owned veterinary hospitals, where I research medication refill requests, review/calculate doses and drug interactions, prevent medication errors, and counsel clients. Throughout my career, I have also volunteered with multiple rescue organizations and even ran my own dog rescue for several years. These experiences taught me how to work with dogs of all personalities—from energetic puppies to shy or nervous rescues who need patience and understanding. Because of my background in animal shelters and veterinary medicine, I strongly believe in science-based, positive reinforcement training and low-stress handling. I have completed a dog training course through Penn Foster and earned my Fear Free certification, which focuses on reducing fear, anxiety, and stress in pets. These techniques help me understand canine body language and create a calm, safe experience for every dog I care for. When I visit your home, my goal is to do much more than simply feed and let your dog outside. I take the time to get to know each dog’s personality, routine, and communication style. That means paying attention to changes in appetite or behavior that could indicate a health issue, providing exercise and mental enrichment, and giving your dog the companionship and attention they deserve while you’re away. Whether your dog loves long walks, playtime, training practice, or simply relaxing with company, I tailor each visit to what makes them happiest and most comfortable. For transparency and to ease your mind even more, I also send regular updates with photos. Thank you for considering me as your beloved dog’s caretaker. I am confident in my 20+ years of animal care and veterinary experience that you can rest easy knowing your dog is in knowledgeable and compassionate hands.

Reviews

Valerie managed my nervous Daisy expertly! I think they are going to be great friends! Daisy responded well to her commands given by Valerie. Valerie listened closely as I described Daisy’s personality and needs. She took time to play ball with her after the walk was complete, which I think made a world of difference! I highly recommend Valerie to anyone looking for someone truly interested in getting to know your pet.

Valerie came as a drop-in to help me work on desensitising my dog to strangers coming into our home and I really valued her help. She gave her own advice on how we could make my dog feel more comfortable and was very receptive to working with me on this which I really appreciated.

Valerie was awesome! She sent me updates about my cat and went above and beyond to make sure everything was clean when I returned. Thank you Valerie!!
