AT HOME FULL TIME
My husband and I are practically natives of Havelock and highschool sweethearts. We have two grown kids now and have been married for 31 years. We have always prioritized family. I first discovered Rover in 2019 when we needed care for our own pup. I was so pleased to find an alternative to kennel boarding for our beloved dog! We quickly realized what an ideal side hustle dog watching would be for our homeschool family. So I became a Rover sitter too. And, what a win win it was for the dogs and us. It was so convenient and rewarding to have dog friends in our lives while managing to homeschool too. The dogs, pet parents and the family loved it. It was such a pleasure to have our dog buddies come to visit us regularly over the years. The kids were always involved and enjoyed being around the various dog breeds. We all enjoyed watching the dynamics amongst various small groups of dogs and figuring out how to best accomodate each dog's unique temperament and needs. Soon I had the right amount of customers and so stopped soliciting on rover for a few years. However, things have changed recently as some of our dog buddies have moved away and we are also empty nesters now. Therefore there is now more time and space to devote to new clients for boarding and drop ins too!

Ratings and reviews
Valerie is a terrific person and dog lover. I am happy to find someone who takes care of my pup like she does her own dog. I received lots of photos of our dog and Valerie even sat on the floor beside Pandi to make sure she ate her breakfast. Pandi loved her fenced yard and the company of her dog too!

Amazing care for our dog : ). We received daily pictures and updates. I would highly recommend her for your pet.

Valerie was very caring and thorough with our doggy. She kept us well informed and sent us lots of pictures. She made sure our doggy was acclimating well and was comfortable.

Excellent Rover. Very caring and communicative! Mocha was extremely well care for. Thank you!

Valerie is the absolute best! She took great care of my older dog for a week. You can tell she truly cares about dogs and has a lot of experience, and she will keep you updated while you're away. She even cooked up fresh food to give my dog on top of her dry food since she needs to gain some weight, and sent some home with me when I picked her up. She gave me good advice since my dog is getting so old and starting to have some health problems. Valerie will take very good care of your pets! I highly recommend her.

Hands down, Mrs. Valerie is the BEST Rover sitter out there. Mrs. Valerie watched our pup several times, most of which for at least 5 days if not longer and she always kept us updated with daily pictures and the events of the day. We have unfortunately moved from the area, and having to say goodbye to Mrs. Valerie and her family was very sad. We will miss them and the love and care they poured out on Rollo. One of the last times she cared for Rollo, we had to leave him when he had just contracted a parasite but we didn't know it was that. She took him to the vet for us, made him a special diet, and even cleaned up after him when he couldn't make it outside. We felt so comfortable with him being with her, and we know he felt so loved and taken care of while we were away. He always loved getting to her house and didn't miss us one bit. We love Mrs. Valerie and anytime we are back in the area we will definitely book with her!

Schedule
I am home all day most days. I am only away for a few hours at a time. And often my husband is here when I'm not. So dogs usually get more company and people time at my house then they do at home. I have had many pet parents tell me that staying with us is like a vacation for their dog too!

Home characteristics
Safety, trust & environment
I have a large fenced yard. So dogs can play outside safely. Inside, there is a baby gate in the front door foyer to prevent escapes. When a dog needs to stay seperated I close the door to their room and as an added precaution block off the hallway with a baby gate as a reminder to the rest of family to be mindful. However, I'm careful not to take on any aggressive dogs. Although, there have been some regulars that have been with us for years that became less social as they aged. So, a once established dynamic changed. Therefore, seperation was in order. Safety is top priority. I never allow dogs to haze each other, or fight at all. And we are very vigilant about preventing escapes. Exterior doors are never left open. And, we don't risk opening an exterior door before securing our dogs. In addition we have back yard access from two seperate rooms. And this is condusive to keeping dogs seperated when needed. There is never a need for incompatible dogs to encounter one another while staying at our home. I always establish a rapport and trust with dogs before I introduce them to others by spending one on one time with them, reinforcing training and taking them for walks. Once that is established I can count on them better to listen if they need to be called away from the other dogs during a small group play if things seem to be getting too intense.

A typical day
Typically I exercise dogs twice a day, 1.5 hours, before each meal. So exercise is about 20-30 min and I'm always careful about heat. We also provide a kiddie pool in the summer for dogs who like that And then they rest for 30-60min before eating to prevent stomache upset or bloat. Some dogs prefer a walk in the neighborhood, others like ball, and some like to play with other dogs. Each eats the dog food their pet parent has provided for them. All dogs are fed seperately to prevent any possible food aggression. I usually have 1 to 3 dogs at a time in addition to our dog. Ocassionally there are more if neccessary. I never exclude my regulars so always find a way to include them. But sometimes that just means we seperate dogs in two groups according to their temperaments and needs. When it's neccessary to seperate dogs for safety or calm we can easily do that. Our house is quiet and peaceful. There is no incessant barking or anxiety. They all settle into their respective spaces knowing that the family is with them meeting their needs for companionship. We will allow dogs on the couches or even beds if they are clean and reliable. My husband and I love to cuddle dogs while watching tv. But we try to discourage them sleeping on couches or beds. There is always the occasional exception. We can be accommodating.
