I grew up with dogs as much as I did with cats. My first experience was when I was two years old and visiting my home country. There I interacted with and befriended my family’s guard dogs. I kept this up through all my visits to my country as well as during my childhood in the UK. I spent a good chunk of my primary and secondary school days playing with the neighbours’ dogs and also got to look after two of the puppies while the neighbours were away. I then took on work experience at a vet where I got to see dogs every day and interact with them as a healthcare provider as well as a friend. I got to know dogs as patients and companions and learned a lot about their physiology, body language and communication quirks. I have always loved dogs and cats. In my domiciliary care experience, I have found myself taking care of patients and their pets. This has increased my experience and confidence in working with dogs. I have never met a dog that didn’t like me.
